Who's using cloth diapers?

Re: Who's using cloth diapers?

  • My friend is giving me her stash of AIOs. (A stash of newborn and a stash of OS...)

    We're set! :)

  • We're going to use cloth diapers with flushable liners because the liners are about $0.06 each & that option was idea for DH. We weren't sure where we'd be living when LO arrived so access to diapers was something we considered . Some places they would have been outrageously expensive or not consistently available but we're moving to the Philippines & even though we could get diapers there we have decided to stick with cloth. Plus we can only take so many pounds of things with us to the Philippines so 2 years worth of liners takes up a lot less space than diapers.

  • I don't do the disp. liners. But we are CDing this baby as well.

  • We cloth diaper DS and are planning to cloth diaper this one as well.  With DS we use predominately bumGenius pockets (we also have some Flips with Stay-dry inserts, but we pretty much use these as backups).

We have newborn Workhorse pre-fitteds to use for baby the first few weeks and then she'll move into our one-size BGs.  Just need to get a few covers and we're set!

  • I really wanted to, but DH doesn't... so it's destroying the Earth for us I guess :(
  • We're going to do disposable inserts and for the first little bit in hospital just after, we registered for some of the biodegradable 7th Generation ones.

And no flamage, truly! But I just don't really get the "Husband doesn't want to" thing. Why does he get all the say?

I wouldn't let him talk you out of it.  That's not to say his opinion doesn't matter, but how can he shoot it down if you want to do it and he has no experience with it?  Maybe look into trial packages?  It'll let you experience CD'ing without a major investment and you'll be able to try out a few different things to see what you like best.  It's certainly something you both need to be on board with, but I can't see a reason not to try it if you have interest!

MH was a little wary at first, but once I explained to him the benefits (and once he actually experienced those first few weeks of disposables) he was interested in trying it.  Now he loves it, he even talks to people about the benefits when the subject comes up.  That's something I never saw coming!

TBH it's no different for him.  We save money, the diapers go on the same way, AND he doesn't have to haul out a bunch of dirty diapers to the trash.  Winning all around for MH!  I do the laundry because well, one, I'm home to do it, but two it's really not that much extra work.  He's tossed a load in for me before (especially when I was really sick during first tri) and he's maybe stuffed a basket or two voluntarily as a nice gesture to me, but 99% of the time CD'ing has zero impact on MH other than benefiting from him not having to deal with the extra trash.

  • We already use cloth diapers with our 2 year old so we'll be continuing the trend with baby no. 2.  With DS I bought A TON of gdiapers to begin with.  We were cloth diaper drop outs for awhile because our daycare wouldn't use them.  We went back when I became a SAHM and the money we've saved is remarkable.  While I like gdiapers, I prefer all in ones and pocket diapers.  Much easier!

  • I voted yes, however, I will be using disposable until he fits into the onesize CD's.  I am hoping that will only be about a month.

  • I'm using OS pockets and hoping that LO's legs will be chunky enough to fit right. Our families both tend to produce big babies and this one is already measuring about a week ahead! We'll use bumgenious and fuzzibunz both. The fb have adjustable elastic in the legs so they will probably be what we mostly use in the beginning.

If LO doesn't fit in the OS right away we'll use disposables for a short while too

  • We've decided to go the cloth route. We're going to probably end up with a mix of OS pockets and AIOs, plus we purchased some newborn GMD Workhorses (just waiting to see if the covers are going to go on sale, and then we'll pick up a few of those).

I think if you're going at it from mainly a pricing standpoint, which is how we started out, I think you'll find that gdiapers are not the way you want to go. GDiapers are sized, so you have to buy the 3 different sized "pants" plus all the inserts - which the disposables I believe were at least as much as a disposable diaper if not more (i.e. on amazon they are $0.40/piece vs a disposable being $0.18-$0.29 or less). So they really aren't very cost saving effective.

However, going with other styles of CD definitely are. Especially when you catch sales. I caught the newborn GMD Workhorses (fitted diapers with snaps that require a cover) for $18/6, and if you add in just a couple covers (which I've found cute ones for $10 or less) it comes out to under $115 for 24 diapers.

We estimated that LO will be in newborns (based on newborns we know) for about 2 months. It came out to be somewhere between $130-140 for the type of disposable diapers we'd use for that length of time. That still leaves us some wiggle room to pick up another nb diaper or two before we break even. Even if LO outgrows the newborns before 2 mo, if we reuse them or resell them, then we'll still come out ahead.

And that's just nb diapers. Sure there are $27+ CD out there, but you can definitely do CD for much much cheaper than that.

  • I used cloth diapers for DS, and was really happy with prefolds for the first few months and BG OS after that. Everything held up well, and I was able to sale everything on consignment when I was done. I really liked the Kissaluv wipes. I also like Bummis flushable liners which I wish I had started using a long time ago, instead at the end of our diapering.

I won't cloth diaper this time, because I'll be working full time, and I just can't deal with the extra laundry.

While I certainly don't think one spouse should have all the say, I do think both parents need to be on board and motivated to cloth diaper to make it work. If someone really isn't okay with it, then thy're going to fight changing diapers, and the other parent is going to become over burdened with diaper changes and laundry.

If you're really interested try to find someone who does it and get their DH's opinion.  We CD our DD and we loved it!  We also did the Bum Genius 4.0 pockets like some pp and DH is constantly telling others about how great of an experience it was for us!!!  Cant wait to break out our stash for LO #2!

  • I wanted to, but DH wants no parts of it. So we will start with disposables. We'll see as baby gets bigger and our checkbook gets smaller if DH changes his mind.

We'll be doing a combo of both cloth and disposable.

I've got all the disposable diapers I'll buy (through size 3) and am now working on my CDs.  I've got gdiapers, bumgenius, and some other brand (alva, no name brand, I'm not sure).  I figure, I'll see what baby/we like best and then buy more of those brands.

Unfortunately, where we live we don't have any in store (except a tiny selection of gdiapers), so everything has to be ordered.
