Crawling and cleaning floors

Is anyone else nervous about LO crawling around and all the dirt and whatnot they'll be touching/eating? I keep my house clean and we don't wear shoes in the house but other places he'll be they do. My mom says I need to get over it, he'll eat dirt on purpose at some point etc. I wish I had her laid back attitude!

Re: Crawling and cleaning floors

  • My pedi actually said crawling around and eating some dirt helps to develop their digestive system. That thought helped me feel better.
  • Yup I'm with you on that but like the PP said it is actually good for them. Scary thought, yuck!

  • Nope. My son shares his toys with the dog, and I find dog hairs all over him, including in his mouth. I could sweep, mop, and vacuum 3x a day, and this would still happen.

  • Yes - a little dirt goes a long way to boost the immune system!  LOL!  Actually, it's quite true, the overuse of Purell and other sanitizers is far worse than eating a little dirt.

  • I swiffer dry and wet cloth our floors every day and vacuum the rugs each day, then I steam mop the whole house once a week and there is still dirt and dog hair on dd.  Drives me nuts, but I don't worry too much about it affecting her in a bad way.  DS did the same thing and he is sick once, maybe twice, a year.

  • YA! It's pretty nuts how dirty they get so quickly. I don't think there's much we can do about it other than try to keep it clean as possible.

  • Not to make you paranoid, but don't worry about dirt, worry about choking hazards at other places. My LO found a penny at my BIL's house, and they have a baby too.

This!! I try to keep the floors as "clean" as possible, but the dog hair defeats me every day...

  • I worry more about the dog fur on our carpets than the dirt. I try really hard to keep the floors clean for our 3yo too, but the d@mn dog sheds like nothing else. LO ends up with fur between his tiny little fingers and in his mouth no matter how often I vacuum. Sick.

Ha, it's really far less ambitious than it sounds.  Small house and our two living rooms are mostly taken up by the two area rugs and furniture.  There isn't much floor to go over and the swiffering each day takes maybe 20 minutes tops for both wet and dry.  It's the steam mopping that is a pita but if I don't do it weekly they get out of control.

If it's on the floor, and she's not supposed to have it, dd will for sure find it.  I'm amazed at her hawk eye for things like that.

this. I could clean all day long and the kid would still be a mess. I've surrendered to trying to keep him dirt/dog hair free because it won't happen.  The kid wants the dog toys and the dog wants the kid toys.

this! I have hardwood and laminate flooring all through this house, and I have a Dyson and swiffer frequently, but with a labrador, I have hair everywhere.

  • I'm really not too concerned.  The dog hair is everywhere, it's a fact of life.  I do sweep most days just because visible grass on the floor drives me crazy and I figure the crumbs should go since I am not interested in mice.  Honestly though, I do this more because DD has a wonderful way of tossing half her meal on the floor for the dog than because she is crawling around.

Good luck, your LO will be just fine with a little dirt. :)

Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

  • I'm super paranoid about it too, I always think that people will judge me when they see dog hair stuck on him, but it's impossible to keep up so I just try to let go.  My niece ate a bunny turd once when she first started crawling, so I tell myself at least i'm one up on that! :)

This. I don't worry about the dirt, dog fur, kitty fur. I sweep daily and mop often but it still covers the floor most days with 4 pets and a toddler too. I worry about DS2 finding coins, wheels of matchbox cars, other things that are choking hazards. As much as I try to separate big boy and little boy toys they play together all day long, so you just do the best you can with everything (dirt and hazards included.) Id say as long as LO is fine dont worry. My DS1 lived through very well and is hardly ever sick, maybe once or twice a year.
