Question for all..

Okay, I am just writing this for a little peace of mind.

I keep hearing of people saying that they recently got an u/s and the tech found something of concern.

I haven't had an u/s since my anatomy scan at 18 weeks.  I am nearly 30 weeks now.  Is anybody else not getting ultrasounds?  Are you worried that there's something that you don't know?  I am getting a little nervous.  Baby is kicking nice and strongly though.

Re: Question for all..

  • Personally (and yes, I realize I'm a ftm) if the doctor hasn't seen a need to order another u/s, I wouldn't worry!
  • I think it depends on your practice. I don't get any more ultrasounds either unless they think something is wrong.  So if I don't have anymore until the baby is born that's a good thing!

  • The only ultrasounds I've had were at 6 weeks & 8 weeks (because of bleeding), and my A/S at 20 weeks. No other scans scheduled.

  • I had my anatomy scan at almost 20 weeks. We had a fetal echocardiogram at around 23 weeks since they thought there might be a problem with his heart. Nothing since then.

A lot of the u/s posts I've seen were follow-ups to problems that were found earlier (like my 23 week u/s). Are these the ones you're noticing?

This!  I've only had one u/s for each pregnancy.  They only do more if they see something of concern.

  • I had U/S's every 4 weeks w/DD because she was conceived via IVF. This one was a miracle oops so they're treating me like your average pregnant woman and haven't seen any reason for concern so we had our anatomy scan at 18 weeks and no more U/S scheduled. If you're feeling baby move and Dr. sees no need for concern then you're fine.

  • I had one at 6w, 7w, almost 9 weeks, and 18 weeks, but nothing since. I had the 6w and 7w ones because of early bleeding. The 9 week one was for dating, and the 18 week one was my a/s. I'm not supposed to get any others unless there are issues, but since I've moved and am at a new practice, they want to do a growth one to check it out themselves, so I should be having one around 32 weeks, but they haven't confirmed. But yes, I am always a nervous nelly about what could be going wrong in there and would like another look!

  • I had a dating u/s early, then the a/s at 20 weeks and a follow up u/s at 24 weeks because they couldn't see everything they needed to at 20 weeks. I won't be having any more u/s unless they think there is a concern.

  • My OB typically only does 1 at 20wks. I had one early for dating and then one at 19wks. If she were concerned at all, I am sure she would do another. We did a 4d outside of the office just to see the baby again, but that is it.

  • I am glad to see that this doesn't worry anybody else.  That makes me feel better

  • I think that since we had like 6 US's with Cole it seems like a lot less with this pg.  He wasn't cooperative at ALL for the AS and we needed like 4 more to get everything.

  • I had quite a few ultrasounds in the beginning because of a history of MC and some IF issues.  However, after they determined I was "normal" at around 12 weeks, I was supposed to just have my a/s at 20 weeks and then maybe another one at around 31-33 weeks.  That being said, when I had my 28w appt, the baby's heart rate dropped a ton on the doppler, so they checked him/her out just to be sure (everything was fine- he/she was just moving at that time).  So I'm still going to have one more ultrasound at around 33 weeks, but I understand that I'm a special situation!

My OB does another routine u/s at 32-33 weeks to check position and get a size estimate. I wouldn't be concerned if he didn't feel the need to do another though.

I also have an u/s at 32 weeks to check for size. Other than that it has been the normal (6 wk dating, 12wk, 18 A/S) plus a precautionary check when they thought I had a blood clot in my leg.

  • I am with you!! I got one at 18 weeks and would not get another! BUT i had a big baby last time...and needed a c-sec! And this one is measuring even bigger! SO they need to check on him in 3 weeks!! and then plan the c-sec! But dont worry...if they dont want to see the baby,,,,thats a good thing!

  • I wouldn't be worried. I got/tget them frequently because:

    1. twins

    2. IVF patient

    3. have been having 30-40 daily contractions since 15w and also had a SCH bleed at 10w6d

The fact that all looked great at your a/s and your doc doesn't feel the need to do another one is a great thing!

  • Having limited us is a good thing so dont worry. I get an us done every week due to high blood pressure. its amazing to watch her grow weekly and get to see her and that she is healthy puts my heart at ease a little, but they are exspensive! i have met our 3,000$insurance deductable almost since may, so its not so fun on my wallet! being a ftm this has been a rollercoaster experience for me..been on bed rest since 20 weeks... im 27.5 now. im just ready to meet her already :)

With DS I didn't have any u/s after my 20 wk until I my waterbroke.  With this LO is have to have a lot because I'm high risk.  I wouldn't be concerned with less u/s just means there is less to worry about.

  • I'm getting another one because it's standard practice at my OB's office.  I have a very low-risk, uncomplicated pregnancy so I think this U/S is just to check baby's position and to see how big he is.

  • No ultrasound for me since 19 weeks.  I won't be getting one either unless I go past my due date.  No need to worry.

  • My practice normally only does a 20 week. I had one at 8 weeks because of bleeding, and then I paid for an elective at 30 weeks.

Maybe this is best for FFFC but I totally side-eye doctors who give tons of ultrasounds to low risk moms without a good reason. Part of why health care costs are out of control in this country.

  • Sometimes I wish I was in the same boat as the rest of you. My dr does u/s every visit no matter what. I've had one every visit since I found out I was pegnant at 4 weeks. It reassures me that everything is okay but the cost factor freaks me out. For some reason I have this nightmare in the back of my head that they will charge me for thousands of dollars in the end and my insurance wont cover it (but im hoping its just a nightmare). Now that I have GD I will be getting growth scans in the hospital so I am hoping my doctor will work with them and not do her own u/s scans because it will be too much.

I think I'm the only one who posted about getting another one even if I'm low-risk but just to clarify, I'm Canadian so we don't have to pay for it.

I wasn't referring to anyone in this post, just in general.

  • We have detailed scans at each visit (currently every 2 weeks) and I always hold my breath until given the ok each time. I think that's just part of being a mom, whether it's your first or second, third, etc.

Try not to worry too much though!

  • I haven't have one since 20 weeks either... I am not going to worry since the doctor doesn't think I need to. I mean what would I do differently if I know something is wrong with him now compared to in 9 weeks?

  • I've been getting almost monthly u/s from week 12 onward to rule out skeletal displaysia. It's a lot more scary to have a lot of ultrasounds if they're looking for something, and your doctor would have told you if they were concerned about something and wanted another u/s for it. I'm glad your baby is H&H and that your doctor doesn't feel the need to give you another one.
