I could ask the names board but they scare me. My friend recently had her baby girl, named her Elia. I had been pronouncing it wrong the whole time, until I heard her say it out loud. How would you say it?

Like the singer, Aliyah! If I spelled that correctly, I'm not sure.

I was thinking "ELLE-e-ah" or something.

I have a male friend name Eila, too, pronounced "E-Lah", so maybe that's where I got it from? Was wondering if I was the only one to mis-pronounce!

I would think EE-lee-uh. It makes me think of Elia Kazan, the director of East of Eden back in the James Dean days. Although that sent me on a wild google chase to see how he actually pronounced his name, in my head I always say EE-lee-uh.

I'd say it differently than anyone else here - I was pronouncing it as Ee-lee-ah (like Celia without the C) in my head. Not sure how they're getting the Aaliyah pronunciation from Elia, since it's spelled with an E, but to each his or her own.

That's what I was thinking. Like Elin, Tiger's ex-wife. Or like Elian Gonzalez.
