Decaf Coffee?

I used to drink coffee before getting pregnant and I don't want to take any chances and drink any especially during the first Tri, but would you drink decaf? I have been craving coffee....

Re: Decaf Coffee?

  • I don't see it being a problem. I started drinking a cup of regular every day after my first trimester ended...we get about 200 mg of caffeine a day, and thats more than one 8oz cup. There is so little caffeine in decaf, that if you want it for the taste, I'd say its fine. If you are really concerned, ask your dr.

  • I was craving it the other day, and looked it up. I found that even "naturally decaffeinated" is done so with a chemical that is not healthy. I read up and saw that the best decaf method is a swiss water method, but you'll probably have to go to a specialty natural foods store for that. I haven't looked yet.

However, for all the normal pregnant ladies, they drink decaf and 1 cup of caf all the time, so us uber-cautious people can try and take a lesson from them. I have just decided sips of DH's normal latte's will suffice until second tri. But I am being super careful right now.

  • I have had 2 nurses tell me that it was ok to drink 1 cup of regular coffee during the first tri so I think decaf should be ok in moderation. Just wanted to see what others have been told.

Starbucks has Swiss water processed decaf coffee. If you want delicious treat, find a Starbucks with a Clover machine - it's basically French press coffee by the cup so you can choose your blend rather than ordering whatever is brewed at the moment. The baristas usually can point you to the Swiss-water processed blends.

My MFM actually recommended coffee to help with headaches, FWIW. But I understand being cautious, especially in the 1st tri!

I drank decaf in the very beginning and then was up to half and half by the end of the first trimester.  I now drink a cup of regular coffee a day.  Without coffee, I get terrible headaches.  My Dr was fine with a cup a day.

  • I did decaf but eventually I had no desire to drink coffee at all. My love of coffee has just recently come back, and I figure regular coffee once a day is probably fine, so I'm back to regular. I missed it. Smile

  • I've been drinking a cup of half decaf and half caf every day without issue. I am familiar with the chemical process in decaf, however I also know that there are so many chemicals in the food we consume every day that it's impossible to avoid them all without being super conscientious.

  • You can relish your daily coffee kick during your pregnancy so long as you limit your caffeine intake to 200mg a day, that?s what my medical practitioner instructed me to do. This amounts to about two cups of instant coffee or one and a half cups of filtered coffee. Regularly having more than 200 mg of caffeine throughout pregnancy can boost the risk of miscarriage or having a baby with reduced birth heaviness. The 200mg limit encompasses all causes of caffeine. So as well as coffee you'll need to enumerate teas, colas, power drinks and even chocolate! Famous coffee shop Ocala
