We did this for my sons first birthday. We used some stuff from the movie cars but overall I wanted it generic. I used a lot of checkered race flags that I picked up from party america. Also just go to a toy store and buy some cars. Another idea is to go to a craft store and pick up wooden toy cars and let kids paint them if you are looking for a activity for kids.
I have seen SO much stuff recently at places like Hobby Lobby, Michael's, JoAnn's, US Toy, etc. that would have been perfect for his party. Street sign stickers/decorations, crafts, etc.-- all stuff I ended up either making or ordering online at the time.

Have you looked on Etsy? There's a bunch of designs for sale. You choose one, they can even personalize it, and then you get the files and just print them out and decorate We did that for the basketball theme, and it worked out great!
