Don't know if I told you all about the big drama of me not being asked to be in my sisters 3rd wedding, I was in her 2nd. Anyway, I will be a guest this time...I am still hurt and annoyed but trying to let it go. I am looking for something to wear that is fancy enough to make me stand out but not too much since I am not "in" the wedding. Ok, this has been bugging me like crazy, and I hesitate to say anything because I'm a genuinely nice person and I really do care about the board and try to be helpful and positive. But that dress you were originally looking at costs almost $400.
You said a long time ago that your family is on wic, and then in another post that you have an escalade, and now you're looking at nearly $400 dresses?!? I don't mean to be overly harsh or cruel. This is coming from someone who is also on wic. But I use the extra money I save on buying staple foods to buy more produce and healthy foods for hazel that I would not otherwise be able to afford. We don't eat fancy healthy food ourselves, we drive modest cars, live in a very modest apartment, and work our asses off full time plus several part time jobs, just to survive and someday provide a better life for whatever children we have.
I'm a liberal person, I believe in public assistance, I have no problem with families choosing to have more children while on wic, but you have no business taking from the goverment if you can afford an escalade and expensive dresses for yourself. Frankly, I just find it insulting to the people who are working hard just to make it through these tough economic times. Maybe you're not even on wic anymore, but I don't see how in such a short time you could go from qualifying for wic to buying an escalade and expensive clothes. You must have been saving for a while for that car. Really I just take it personally because I am working so hard for everything I have and I feel like you aren't appreciating what a blessing it truly is to live in a country that is willing to help you support your family, instead of leaving your children to starve or controlling how many children you are allowed to have. Its just a slap in the face, and I feel it's this sort of thing that makes some people think public assistance is a waste of taxpayer money.
Just take a step back and realize that there's a lot of people who are not much better off (many of them on this board) and are paying their taxes so that you can feed your children the healthy food that they deserve. Are they buying escalades and $400 dresses? probably not.
Damn. Does it help that all the dresses I posted are less than $200?

First of all, thanks to those that have helped with my dress question.
As for your post...let me see if this clears anything up for you.
1st of all I know $400 is a lot on a dress. The wedding is a year away, so I would have time to save up, otherwise...no I would not be splurging on a $400 dress.
2nd the Escalade is an 07, still expensive yes, but nothing like a brand new one. We needed something that would fit all of us, we had an Odyssey and just felt like we had outgrown it. Try fitting 6 people plus a load of groceries or camping gear or what have you in something other than a big SUV...it doesn't quite work.
3rd we just qualify for WIC by >< much. My husband has a great job, thank goodness, because WIC certainly doesn't cover even close to half of what we need for our kids, household and selves, but we are not rich by any means. We went on WIC in the first place when we were going broke buying formula for 3 babies...we tried for a couple months after they were born buying it ourselves but it was just too much. We don't qualify for any other assistance. We live in a small 3 bedroom home that we bought pre kids which we have out grown, but have not yet been able to buy something that will be comfortable for all of us.
Believe me we are not taking anything for granted...I can't help what others think if they don't know the whole story, looks can be deceiving...as they say.
I knew all that about your car and wic. Before I said anything, I rechecked those old threads to make sure I wasn't getting facts wrong... You're not making the compelling argument you think you are.

We make just a few dollars less than the WIC cut off, we get WIC for the few things they provide because we are within the allowed income...that is the end of it.
If I want to save up $400 over 11 months, the wedding is in May, for a dress I don't see that as a slap in the face to others on WIC. If we need a big vehicle to carry 6 people and our stuff around and we got a great deal on a used Escalade I don't see that as a slap in the face to others on WIC. Would it be better if we had gotten a Suburban, because we were looking at them but couldn't find as good a deal as we got on the vehicle we picked.

No one is trying to upstage anyone. You mean to tell me you wouldn't want to get a little fancy for a very big, very expensive, very flashy wedding??? In case finances were in question again, my sister and her soon to be husband do NOT have any money issues what so ever. I just don't want to not fit in with her guest list.

I wouldn't wear the first one just because of the light color that is close to white...no wearing white to a wedding unless you are the bride right?
I LOVE the black lacy one though. It could be worn on other occasions later too. It's really pretty and classy. Either way, I'm jealous I'm not a size that could fit into those dresses! 
To me upstaging means trying to take the attention from the person who should have it...not trying to fit in with everyone else.
And your right, it probably is too much to spend, I just thought it was beautiful and would fit into her big wedding.
I think I understand what you're saying, but you're just not saying it the right way. lol You said you wanted to 'stand out' and now you're saying that you want to 'fit in'. I think really you just want to look nice, fancier than normal, but be comfortable in the setting at the same time. Is that right?
Yes, thanks. I am her sister, I just want to look nice for her at her big fancy wedding. I would hate for her to be embarrassed by what I wore.
David's Bridal always has cute dresses for under $100. It's my go-to for special occasions.
Honestly, if I didn't have the disposable cash on hand now for a dress, I wouldn't be willing to have to save for it for a wedding that I wasn't in (and required to spend x amount for). There's always the possibility that another unexpected financial issue may arise in the next 11 months and it'd stink to have to worry about being able to pay for the unexpected situation or for a more expensive dress.

Also: They usually have a better selection at the store of discounted dresses as well. Our closest one is an hour away but I've found it worth the trip.

Did you see this one? All the other models are posed nicely and they have this one standing straight like a board. It's like they know the dress does nothing for her and is going to look like crap from any angle and they just gave up.

Thanks. There certainly are much cheaper options, than the one I posted...I saw it on Pinterest and fell in love with it, to be honest I didn't even notice how much it was at first. I liked a lot of those from David's, would be a lot nicer on the pocket that is for sure.
