2nd Trimester

i ate mouse poop....need advice, please...

So this is totally disgusting but I need to share.  I am freaking out right now, have been all weekend.  On friday I was eating the last of what was in a bag of pirates booty.  When I scraped the bottom of the bag for more and didn't feel any, I looked inside to see if there was any left.  Amidst all the little white fluffy flakes I saw several mouse droppings. I freaked out.  My first thought was to stick my fingers down my throat but I knew it was too late.  I must have either eaten some of the poop or at the very least, my fingers touched the poop and then I ate the booty with my fingers.  I started crying and thinking not only about how disgusting it was but more so what effect this might have on my baby.  I am currently 18 wks pregnant and in my 7th week I was diagnosed with toxoplasmosis (luckily it was determined that I caught the toxo prior to my pregnancy so my docs said I don't have to worry).  I called my ob and pcp and even a fetal maternal specialist i saw for the toxo.  No one really had any solid advice.  The best they could tell me was the the biggest threat would have been the toxo and since I already had it I can't get it again.  Since I'm not sick yet, and hopefully won't get sick, there's nothing they can do.  I went online and looked up what diseases mouses can carry and read a little about hantavirus and lcmv (lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus).  I'm not very familiar with these but afraid I may catch it and even worse pass it to my unborn baby.  God only knows what other viruses I need to worry about?

I am writing this post hoping that someone has heard a similar story that had a good outcome. Hopefully someone can tell me I don't need to worry.  Or hopefully someone has some more knowledge of these viruses and/or any other viruses I may need to be concerned with.

Thanks so much for your time and help!

btw- yes, we have called an exterminator....

  • I think you're overreacting a little. If three doctors who know your history are not concerned and say there's nothing to be done unless you actually get sick, then don't fish for trouble. And for the love of jeebus, step away from Dr. Google!

  • I don't know what diseases 'mouses' can carry...I've never heard of them before.

Seriously though? How was a mouse even IN your bag of Pirate's Booty? Do you leave it wide open? And even if you had closed it and the mouse found its way in, its not as though the mouse could cleverly reclose the bag...surely you noticed it was opened somewhat...and that the Pirate's Booty would have gone stale in an open bag.  This is an all around weird post and I don't really believe it holds any truth.

  • Do you regularly have a mouse problem? was the bag already open when you started eating it? I don't really know what to tell you, but I don't know if I would worry about Hantavirus (which is a super virus like ebola and is pretty fatal ie. it causes internal bleeding and organ failure, if you had that it wouldn't be a matter of just passing it on to the baby, it would be life threatening to you). But, I think you get that from inhaling rodent droppings and urine that have been dried for a while - ie if you are cleaning out a cabin after a winter. I don't think it is too common though and I read that mice and rats don't seem to get the deadly form of it, so it should be ok. So, if you have a mouse problem I would get an exterminator because rodents carry lots of stuff.

Anyway, I am not sure what to tell you re: eating poo. I mean you told your docs about the mouse droppings, so they would tell you about any potential viruses etc. so just consult with them.

Thanks for your compassion, and yes my story was true.  Maybe you would've been more sympathetic if you had seen me crying on friday, or may be you would be more sympathetic if you could see how my husband and I have been tearing apart and sterilizing our whole kitchen over the past weekend.  And yes, we do normally keep our bags of food either closed or in tupperware.  In some cases though we make mistakes and maybe a bag only gets closed 3/4 of the way.  Maybe we aren't perfect, maybe it's because we're juggling a 1 and 2 yr old all day and don't have time to make sure we seal every last crack.  Whatever the reaon, it happened and I wish to God it didn't, but it did.   If you wan't to doubt people stories or pass judgement, fine, just do it where no one can hear you or read your comment.  Who knows, it may just be you posting a weird yet frightening story one day....

You already have had 3 doctors to tell you not to worry.  Unless you are physically feeling sick, I would try to relax.  I don't think there is any reassurance or knowledge you will get from a message board that will supercede the professional advice already given to you.  Try to stay off google it will only increase your anxiety about it.  Hope you feel better soon.

  • Yuck! I am sorry that happened to you :( Honestly, I would be totally freaked out too! At this point, you have talked to your doctors and it seems theres not much you can do but wait and see. Hopefully, and more than likely, everything will be just fine. Don't stress over it too much unless there really is something wrong! I'm sure the thought of the mouse in the bag skeeves you out, and hopefully that is the worst that will come out of this situation!

  • I think you are okay.  Think of your shoes and where you walk and taking them off, touching the bottoms, then not washing your hands and eating something.  Or think of walking on your carpet with your shoes that you could have stepped in something.  Then having your kids touch the carpet and put their hands in their mouth - I'm sure we all have second hand poop eating.  So try to think of it that way.  Fill your mind with something else.  I'm sure you and baby will be fine and maybe baby will have an extra awesome immune system ??

  • Wow I'm really sorry this happened to you. I can't imagine the horror of find the poop in something you were eating. And the toxo scare you already had. But I think if something was going to happen or you were going to get sick you would of already. Just try not to stress too much and do everything you can to get rid of the mice, I know we have been fighting with ants this past week.

  • Honestly, with the pervasiveness of rodents in restaurants (even really nice ones), we've all probably ingested a bit of it at one point or another, as gross as that is to think about.

  • Sorry you went through that.  I had something slightly similar happen on Friday and freaked out as well.  I was eating a piece of carrot cake at a restaurant, and when it was just about gone, I noticed a HUGE chunk of fuzzy gray mold on the remaining piece.  We rushed home so I could stick my finger down my throat.  It wasn't as easy as I thought it would be (have never done that before), but it did make me feel a little better about the situation.

If baby is still moving around and kicking, I'm sure you're fine.

  • I'm surprised this wasn't mentioned - the mouse droppings may have been in the bag straight from the factory - I've heard of stories of this happening before. I would contact the manufacturer and let them know what happened - this may be something they are either aware of or need to be aware of ... at least you will probably get a few free bags of snacks! (If you could ever eat them again - I probably couldn't).

This is precisely what I came in here to post.

I once found a tooth in a package of powdered soup mix.  Found bits of plastic in a jar of readymade salad dressing.  Both times I called the companies and reported it. One denied that was actually what I found (liability), sent me a prepaid envelope so I could mail it to them (the tooth), or actually took information from the product so that batch could be researched, then instructed me to return it to the store for a refund (the dressing).  Both sent me coupons for free products -- as if I'd really want more of it.

  • Since it happened Friday and you're not throwing up or anything I would think you're probably out of the woods.

I know what you're going through.  I had dinner at my friends house about a month ago and she served me caesar salad dressing that expired in 2008.  Apparently her mom stockpiles and it was just opened  but since I don't eat expired food even while not pregnant (I even throw out cans that passed the expiration date) I panicked a bit and called telehealth (a service in Canada where you can call and speak to a nurse instead of going to emerg, and they tell you if you should go to a hospital or calm you down).  She said that since it had been 8 hours I was probably fine and if I started throwing up then I should go to the hospital.

  • Wow, someone let a handful of a$$hats in here.  What a bunch of jerky comments!

The OP clearly stated that she was looking for someone who has heard of a similar story, not that she didn't trust her doctors' vague advice.

OP, the most common symptom from eating mouse turds is "food poisoning."  You would have already had that.  I am a biologist and have 3 years of prior experience studying rodents as disease vectors.  I'm more on the research side, so of course you should take the advice of your health professionals over mine.

In my opinion, you are fine.  You don't need to be paranoid with looking for signs of the diseases you have researched online... so many strange changes take place during pregnancy, that if you start thinking this way you'll go crazy and call the doctor over a strange fart!  You will know if something is wrong.  If you get a fever or any severe symptoms you have never had before (severe, uncharacteristic muscle aches, breathing problems, etc.) then you need to give your doctor a call.  Most of the harmful diseases household mice carry are pretty rare.  Just clean the area and be cautious from here forward since you know they are in your home.  I would normally tell a person to take severe symptoms seriously for the few months following the incident, but you're pregnant so you're paying attention to your body very closely already!  You will call your doctor if any serious symptoms arise.

Also, you are disgusting for eating mouse turds.  Just kidding!  I apparently ate a handful of mouse turds when I was a year old without any issues.  I also ate some christmas caramel popcorn with the same special ingredient last year at my grandma's house (gross, grandma!  how old was that popcorn anyway??!  haha).  No issues there.  I would be concerned if I ate turds now because of the pregnancy, but I would just giggle about it, and go on with business as usual.  If I got a severe fever or other major symptom, I would call the doctor.  You probably have nothing to worry about!

If you need a better piece of mind, you could call your local health department and speak with someone there (specifically, someone who knows their head from their a$$ - might take a couple days to track said person down).  Most cities require serious rodent-borne diseases to be reported by local clinics/hospitals.  I really think this will just give you some useless data and cause needless worry.  Just forget about it, and call your doc if you notice something wacky.  :)  Remember that your body is designed to handle a lot of nasty, nasty things in this world.  Hope this puts your mind at ease. :)
