Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Need support tonight

I need some advice/ support. My LO had a great first two weeks of life..very content baby. Right at 3 weeks he got very fussy and started showing signs of reflux. The pedi prescribed him .4ml of Zantac ( he weighed 7.7 with clothes on). ?It helped with the acid in his throat and nose, and dry heaving, gagging, wheezing, but the screaming continued. I decided to go off dairy the day he was prescribed and started taking Zantac. That was 2 weeks ago, and he still has hours of screaming.the screaming always follows a feeding.? I am losing my mind with the screaming!! It has hard to see him so upset, seemingly in pain. Some nights I just sit and cry with him because I feel helpless and very, very frustrated. I am starting the total elimination diet tomorrow, praying that helps. I am doing everything I know to do...5S's, bicycle for his painful gas, bouncing, wearing him in the wrap...I bought a Rock N Play for him to sleep in because of the incline, he feeds in a sitting up position, stays upright after eating.... ?Gripe water, gas drops... I'm at a loss, and feeling depressed thinking of living like this for months.? Any other suggestions?? Or anyone else going through something is similiar?? I need encouragement tonight. ?Thanks ladies!??

Re: Need support tonight

  • Have you tried less food at each feeding but more frequent feeds?
  • I second lowering the amount of formula you are giving.  With my first son we had the same issues around 3 weeks and we thought he had reflux too, but it did turn out he was just eating too much too fast.  Took us about a month to realize this and that month was HELL.

     Good luck !

  • My oldest had pretty bad reflux.  Zantac did nothing for her.  She eventually ended up on prevacid and it worked almost instantly.  We had to feed her in an almost straight up and down position (I ep'ed and she was bottle fed).  She had to be burped after every ounce and she had to be upright for close to an hour after each feeding.

She also had colic and screamed pretty much everyday from 3pm-9pm.  This sounds terrible, but I eventually got used to the screaming.  I knew she was ok, so I put her in a moby wrap and wore her, all while she screamed.  She seemed to cry a little less if she was worn and I was moving.

As far as you eliminating dairy, it can take up to 4 weeks for it to be totally out of your system.  And almost everything has traces of dairy in it, so you really have to read labels to be sure you aren't taking in any dairy.

Hang in there, it will get better.

  • I understand your pain. Know it is okay to lay LO down to take a few mins for sanity. We are still trying to figure out the right meds for our LO.Just know you may need to see a specialist for help with proper doasage. Also, this site really helped me www.infantrefluxdisease.com They have a message board and lots of support.I would also look for a support group that is local...because this is a very hard thing to deal with.I'm not a doctor but from my experience the dosage seems low.

  • One question is the .4 ml once or twice a day?I looked back at my records and when my LO was 8 lbs he was on a dose of 2.0 ml broke out between two doses. In other words he got 1.0 ml twice a day.

  • He is taking .4 ml twice a day. At first, that seemed to really help. But I know he asput on more weight in those 2 weeks, and Zantac is very weight sensitive.  I Asked his pedi to up the dosage, but she wanted to wait another week to make sure it was really reflux. (?)  I am very frustrated, because in that week he cried one night from 9 pm-2 am, and last night 4-9 pm.  I really believe he is in pain after he eats by the way he screams.  But it's so hard to know if it's a food intolerance or his reflux hurting him.

Im going to call the doctor again, and ask her to increase the dosage... Whether she increases it or not, I'm giving him more!

  • My LO has bad reflux and has a MSPI. I am soy and dairy free and LO switched from Zantac (only worked for a few weeks) to Prevacid solutabs( work much better). He is help upright 30 min after a feed, burped constantly and for the first few weeks also was on mylanta. Eliminating dairy and soy can take a month to leave yours and LO system. I also feel the age makes a huge diff. We had a very colicky and fussy baby. He was unhappy whenever he was awake. He cried for hours in the evening and I was at my breaking point. As he neared two months there was a huge improvement, which was also when I started being dairy/soy free. I have been free for almost a month and he is significantly happier. he still has evening moments and some fussy days but I am sane now!

ETA : a lifesaver was, and still is, AM radio static. It usually quiets him in an instant. Make sure volume is louder than his cry. We use it on bad nights, in the car and now at a low volume to sleep

  • Zantac didn't help us either.  But now we are on Prevacid and his feeds get thickened with rice cereal and he is much better.

I have acid reflux (not my baby) and Prevacid is a DREAM!  It turned my life around when other things such as Nexum didn't work.

She's breastfeeding, not formula feeding.  No advice, just wanted to say good luck!  I really hope you and your baby feel better soon!!
