Baby Names

How do you pronounce Ina?

A FB friend of mine just named her baby girl Ina..  My inclination was to pronounce it EE-na.  My mother corrected me and said it is Eye-na.  What is the correct pronunciation?

Re: How do you pronounce Ina?

  • I know an older woman named Ina, and she pronounces it EYE-nah.

  • I would say EYE-na...but the only person I have ever heard of with this name is Ina May Gaskin, so that's what I'm going by!

  • My aunt's name is Ina and she pronounces it Eye-nah.

That being said I have a friend from Germany who is also named Ina. She pronounces it EE-nah.

Either way is correct, but the Eye-nah pronounciation will be the most popular here in North America while EE-nah is more common in Europe.

  • Reminds me of Ida/Isla so I'd assume Eye-na.

  • I've heard it both ways, think it depends on where you're from and how the I is pronounced there.

  • Thanks for the clarification.  One of our top choices right now is Isla and I could see people (especially spanish speaking) say Ee-Sla instead of Eye-la.  Now that I look at it I guess Ina would be the same as Ida/Isla so N. America would say Eye-na.
  • The lady I knew with this name pronounced it eye-na
