Babies: 6 - 9 Months

I am in sleep HELL!

My LO has never been a good sleep but lately it has gotten so much worse... We transitioned him to his crib from the RnP at 4.5 months. At first he was doing pretty well. He even slept 7 hours straight three nights in a row. Yeah that didn't last. He slept pretty well for about a week and then it went downhill. He has been sleeping terribly, waking 5-6 times a night for the past month now. It also takes me forever to actually get him down initially at night. He also naps terribly. He usually only takes two 30 min or so naps a day. On a good day I'll get an hour out of him. And this is after fighting him to go down for a nap. The thing that kills me is he's SO tired!! He needs to sleep so bad! I know he's over tired and I just don't know how to get out of this vicious cycle!! We have a sound machine that goes on all night. Its super dark in his room for naps. He's too old and big to swaddle. I am just seriously at a loss as to what to do. I feel like I'm losing my patience and that makes me feel so bad. I love him so much this is just SO hard going so long without getting a good nights sleep. I feel like I can't be the best mother I need to be without sleep. I'm getting about 2 hours at a time right now. I feel like I'm losing it. Someone please give some advice! I'm reluctant to let him CIO but I honestly don't know what else to do. If you did Ferber how did it work out for you? Any advice is much appreciated.

Re: I am in sleep HELL!

  • Please excuse my wall of text...I bump from my phone.

I forgot to mention that this is totally making me second guess having another child which I know is terrible. I just honestly don't know if I can do this again! Especially with a toddler running around!!

  • I did Ferber and it worked very well!!! My LO was up 3-10 times a night. One night DH and I had enough after being up trying to consoling her numerous times.. we let her CIO.. shes never slept better. I was terribly against it, but it worked. I was at my wits ends.

What time does your LO go to sleep? We started putting LO to bed between 6 and 630 and she'll sleep for 11.5-12 hrs a night. Naps got much better too.. She gets up and goes back down for a nap at 8 sleeps for an hour or so then back down at 1130 sleeps for another hour or so and down again at 230 for another hour or so..

  • I did Ferber also!  The CIO part sucks, but you go in at increasing intervals so LO knows you did not abandon him.  I was reluctant to try it at first but it worked by day 3.  I highly recommend trying.  The CIO doesn't last and you'll both be happier having proper sleep.  Good luck!

  • I hate to tell you this, but LO was the same way.  I was at the end of my rope so we did CIO (we followed The Sleep Easy Solution).  Worked like a charm.  LO still wakes 2-3 times per night but that is my fault because I am reluctant to let her cry in the middle of the night.

  • I was reluctant to do controlled crying / Ferber but I finally did it and it worked amazingly well.  On the first night she cried 2 hours on and off again, and I went in at 3, 5, 7, 10, 10, 10, etc. to sooth her but did not pick her up.  The second night she only cried for 7 minutes. The last two nights - nothing - and she's slept 11 hours straight. You need to read Ferber's book; it will make you feel much better about giving this a try.

I've thought about this! THis may be a possibility...I felt around though and I don't feel any teeth coming through. Any advice on how to get through this if it is teething?

Jeez I can't tell you how jealous I am. 11.5 hours a night sounds divine. We usually put him down between 7:30 and 8:30. Is that too late maybe? I feel like putting him down earlier is so...I don't know...early! lol Maybe not though!

  • Unfortunately, we weren't aware until we saw the teeth coming in, we couldn't feel them either. He only was fussy at night - -  during the day - totally fine. We did CIO too. Our LO clung to it instantly.

Once we realized we used hylands teething pills (all natural). They worked good as far as I could tell.

  • We are trying the CIO now but are really struggling with it. I am determined to do it since so many say it works. Unfortunately my LO starts out with bearable wimpers but then it turns into such crazy crying that it sounds like he is hyperventilating. It gets to be too much too take and we end up picking him up. We dont know what to do. It is hard to leave a baby crying that hard.

  • We have been dealing with this since right before DD turned 3 months old. A good night I am up 5 times with no long wake ups. A bad night is much worse than that, with at least one wakeup being 2+hours. The longest stretch of sleep she has had is 3 hours.

I am currently trying to work with the No Cry Sleep Solution. We have stopped bed sharing and cosleeping and I have moved her into her own room. It has improved slightly since she has started to get one 3 hour stretch a night.

I am hard pressed to believe with DD it is just teething, as it is 5 months of shatty sleep.

  • He sounds just like my LO.  I am 99% sure that her problem is separation anxiety.  I haven't done any sleep training b/c she has had some issues gaining weight and I still nurse her a few times during the night.  But she cries a lot more than a few times a night.  She ends up in our bed and in the PNP in our room by midnight most nights.  I'd kill for 2 hours of sleep in a row.  Does he calm down immediately after you pick him up?  If so, it may be sep. anxiety.  Like the pp's said, sleep training will help.

BTW, my older DD was the same way and did not STTN until 14 mos.  And we still had another baby.  Everyone told us the second one would be a piece of cake.  Everyone LIED.  LOL.

Yes he does calm down right after I pick him up! I'm wondering if it isn't sep. anxiety too...

Haha yeah that's what everyones said to me too about having another one. That if this one isn't a great sleeper then the next one will be! Odviously that's not always the case! We'll sleep again one day...hang in there:)

  • Let the kid CIO. The longer you wait the harder it will be. They don't even remember it in the morning...I promise.

  • I'd pick up Ferber's book.  It's not just CIO.  I'm actually using it for the information about scheduling and sleep even though I have no intention of letting DS CIO at this point.  Things haven't improved for us yet, but in reading the book, I can see a lot of things I'm doing "wrong."  My problem is that I don't know how to implement his suggestions with my son in full-time daycare.

Good luck!  My DH said the other day that he's not sure he wants another baby because of the sleep deprivation, and my son sleeps better than what you've described.  It broke my heart, but I'm hopeful that DH will change his mind.

  • Just wanted to say we are in the same boat.  Tired and every night, up and down... We have realized crying it out just is not for us. She gets too upset and we know she will sleep when she is ready.  She goes to bed well, but she gets up a lot and I think teething might be part of it, but where are the teeth already?? :)
