1st Trimester

Can I really not get my hair colored??

I always thought it was an old wives tale that women shouldn't get their hair colored while they're pregnant. I'm 38, six weeks along, some grays are poking out and I want to get my hair colored. (I usually get it colored every 6 weeks.) My husband this morning laid a small guilt trip on me for "endangering" the bun (our affectionate name for the baby). Thoughts? Should I wait to get it colored until later or is it safe to do it now? It's a no-smell coloring that my stylist uses so there are no harsh fumes to breathe in.

  • This seems to be a personal opinion - some women dye their hair from day one until they hit the hospital, others weight until the 2nd try, and others go natural.

There are not enough studies to say one way or another. If the dye has no harsh fumes I think it would be safer. There is some debate though if the dye can soak into your skin or not, which is why some ladies opt for highlights vs whole head.

No right or wrong here - talking with your doctor and decide what is best for you.

  • I always thought it wasn't safe until 2nd tri due to smell and chemicals. Depends on who you talk to. Some people will say as long as the area is well ventilated and they don't get dye on your skin its ok. Others will say just get highlights. Others will say don't do it. It really boils down to your comfort level. I haven't dyed my hair since I found out I was preg, for me, any risk with it isn't worth getting my hair done. I'd ask your Dr and see what they think.

  • It is the soaking through the skin issue. Traces of the chemicals can be found in your urine.  I didn't dye my hair with my DS, while pregnant or breastfeeding. I will probably do a hair mascara wand this time because I have even more gray.

  • Up to you.

My DR said it was perfectly fine. She was also pregnant at the time. At my highlight appointment when my hair dresser wheeled me around in the chair guess who was sitting across the way getting her hair colored? My DR :)

  • I wait until 2nd tri even though I only get highlights and it doesn't touch my scalp.

  • My Dr. told me to wait until second trimester for full on color, but said I could do highlights any time. So I guess its up to the doctor. Apparently the highlights dont get soaked up in your scalp the way full color does. I would check with your doctor before you did anything just to be sure.

  • I have a and inch of hair growth... I dyed my hair in December, and now just when I was ready to hit the salon... I?m prego!

OMG! good thing I dye my hair only two shades lighter than my natural colour... what should I do? wait for 2nd trimester to dye it or just highlights?

I?m planning on having a professional photoshoot when my belly shows, and I don?t want to have messy hair

  • My dr said it was fine. I did while pregnant with my first and already have with my second. I had no problems.

  • I've colored once already and haven't been told otherwise. Nothing I have read has been consistent.  Some things say go ahead..others say don't.  My doctor said it's fine so that's who I'm listening to. These days most dyes don't have the harsh smells that they used to.  My sisters all colored their hair while pregnant and all had healthy babies.

  • I colored my hair 3 times with Lucas. First was all over color, 2nd time I got highlights, 3rd was all over cover again. He's completely healthy. I have a cut/color appt for Saturday morning, just haven't decided what I'm doing yet.

  • I am also a hairdresser (not pregnant just lurking) and I work with another woman who has had 2 heathy boys. She not only worked in the enviroment but also colored her hair (all over) through out both pregnancys. I think ur safe but I'd maby recomend waiting till 2 tri just to be sure!

This, exactly. I wouldn't do a dye that touches your scalp.

  • As long as you don't plan on eating the dye, it's perfectly fine. {And those were my doctors exact words too... love her.}
