3rd Trimester

2 cm Dilated.... @ 35 weeks!?!

so I just got back from the Dr and the Dr and I were both very surprised to find me 2cm dilated!

Does this mean LO will be coming earlier than expected?!

I have another appt in 10 days and she told me she hopes i dont go into labor before then.

Any advice would be helpful, this is my first pregnancy!

Re: 2 cm Dilated.... @ 35 weeks!?!

  • I was a fingertip dilated and 10-20% effaced at 32 weeks. Five weeks later, I am still a fingertip dilated and 10-20% effaced. I also have false labor every day, and do not expect this kid here until the last possible moment.

You can be at 2cm for weeks. Don't stress!

  • Nope, it really doesn't mean anything.  You can be dilated for months, or be at 0cm and suddenly go into labor and find yourself at a 4.

  • It doesn't tell you anything, you could very well be 2 weeks overdue. You can walk around partially dilated for weeks and weeks, or go from zero to baby in hours. Internal exams give you no usable info, unless you're in labor (even then, the only good info is "you're complete, time to push!")

  • I was 3 cm's dilated at 29 wks with DD, and I didn't have her until 37 wks. With DS I was maybe a 1 on a Friday, walked in for my induction on Tuesday morning, and I was a 4.5. Early dilation means abesolutely nothing.

  • No, it doesn't necessarily mean the baby is coming early. I was 1 cm at my 36 week appointment and 60% effaced. At my 38 week appointment I was 4 cm dilated and the doctor could touch the baby's head! I am still pregnant! You can walk around dilated and effaced for weeks before the  baby comes.

That said, just look for the signs of labor and call your doctor if you suspect something is happening.

Effaced is how thinned out your cervix is.

  • Don't worry about it, cervical dilation is not an indicator of when you will go into labor.  I know several people who were 3cm+ by 35 weeks and they all had to be induced after 41 weeks.  There are plenty on the opposite side, like me, who go into labor at 0cm.  Your provider should know better.  I don't know why they make people worry or get their hopes up for absolutely no reason.

  • OMG I LOVE this board and all the wonderful ladies on it, and I know how excited we ALL are about meeting our babies but..

NO ONE CAN PREDICT WHEN YOU'RE GOING INTO LABOR.

2cm at 35 weeks is incredibly common and you could go into pre term labor tomorrow or you could still be sitting at 2 cm or 3cm or 4cm at 6 weeks from now.

Not even DOCTORS can predict when you'll go into labor a bunch of women on a chat board certainly cant

    sorry for ranting

I'm surprised doctor would just send you home!

I was 2 cm at 36 weeks. My LO is still cooking and I was still 2 cm as of Friday at 38 weeks.

This is me exactly. I haven't had any progress since 36 weeks. I've also been 60% effaced since 36 weeks.

This!  I dont think it really means anything.

  • Just like what everyone is saying, it doesn't mean much! You can indeed stay at 2cm for weeks. My OB doesn't check for dilation until 39-40 weeks for this exact reason! I would get my hopes up if I were dilated so soon.
