Rolling over

I've heard tale of July babies rolling over already. Is this true? Is your baby rolling over yet?

I'm looking at DD screaming away during tummy time, and while she can scoot herself off the activity mat in a fit of freaked out rage, there's been no rocking from side to side or anything which looks like she even wants to roll over.

Me too- Julian hates tummy time and will kick his legs so much that he kinda scoots (on his face) a few inches across the mat before I give in and pick him up!

He is great when laying on my chest or on DH. He lifts his head and tries to use his arms.

  • My LO has rolled over, but I really think he it's because he hates tummy time that much.  He would scream and scream.  We still do tummy time, and he doesn't roll over every time even.   He didn't today, he decided to nom on his hands instead!

  • Gabe is rolling over (which I know you knew).  But, he only does it when he is "fresh".  If I put him down tired he won't do it.  I also noticed, if he is in footie jammies he can't get enough traction.  When he is just in a diaper he can do it.

I in no way think Gabe is "advanced".  He hates tummy time with the fire of 10,000 suns.  He only learned to do it to get out of it.  Stinker...

Anyway, from what I understand it is an advanced skill for 2-3 month olds, an emergent skill for 4 month olds, and an expected skill for 5 month olds.

C is right on track from the other stuff you've written before.  I loved her smiley pics :o) she is so cute!

  • Mine can. She however only does it when she really really wants too. And like Katie said, not in footie pjs.

Her biggest attribute is that she's always been a strong baby and loves tummytime. I don't think she's genius advanced either..lol. She just likes to do those things.

  • My DS did Tuesday morning for the first time.  I set him down on his tummy and turned to grab some toys and when I turned around he was looking up at me smiling!!

  • DD rolled over for the first time 2 days ago. Neither of us saw it - I was at work, and DH had laid her down on her tummy and went into the kitchen to heat up a bottle. When he came back to the living room, she was on her back! Now she does it every time we put her on her belly... which we're doing more often than we used to because we wanna watch her roll! lol

  • DS rolls over from tummy to back. I would say sometimes he does it every time I lay him on his tummy and other tummytimes he just wiggles and tries to eat the floor. LOL So he does it, but it might depend what clothing he is wearing too like previous people have said.

  • Mines been rolling over since week one....i also think its because she hates tummy time..she rolls over every time shes placed on her tummy
Lilypie Second Birthday tickers Lilypie Pregnancy tickers
  • Liam has done it at least 6 or 7 times--but also scoots, like your DD, in a fit of rage at hating tummy time.  I doubt it was intentional, and it's been a long time since he's done it.  I think now that he's heavier, he can't do it anymore during his tummy time tantrum.

  • He can but he hasn't perfected this skill yet. Most times when he rolls over he surprises himself. Sometimes he goes days without rolling over.

Awe, mine isn't quite laughing yet, but he wakes up cracking cute smiles at me and cooing....as tired as I am it still makes me want to play with him instead of getting us back to bed!

  • Mine started rolling at 6 weeks. He didn't hate tummy time, now he refuses it by rolling every single time. I wish he didn't know how to roll yet because it takes him away from tummy time. I do not think he is advanced. Just randomly figured it out.
  • When I first read this, the answer was no, no rolling over, not even anything that would make me think she might roll over some time in the near future. Then about an hour later during tummy time she started leaning far to one side and bam! Onto her back! I was so excited! She just seemed like "yeah, so what?" haha! So I put her back on her tummy and she did it again! But, two times was it for today. Still it amused me that I almost responded earlier "not yet" and now my answer is "yep, just started"

This exactly at about 5 or 6 weeks!  DD's legs are strong, the only thing holding her back from rolling over are her arms, they are still too weak.

  • My LO started doing this last week.  She finished her bath, and I had her on a towel on the floor so her little booty could air-dry.  All of the sudden she just kicked her leg over and was on her back! I just stared at her- I was shocked!

Now that she's learned this new trick, she won't stay on her tummy. She's always been a strong little kicker (DH and I both played soccer) so maybe she's showing her emerging soccer skills already!

  • Ours will roll to one side - from his back, not tried to roll over yet, but I don't do tummy time too much other than on my chest.
  • LO has done it a few times from her back to her side kinda - she just gets her arm stuck under her which keeps her from going all the way over - but she has done it a few times the past couple weeks.

She also laughs something fierce when we're playing - its that real belly laugh which I LOVE!!

Same for C.  He has been rolling over for a while now, but only recently really making the conscious effort to do so. (before it was just if he happened to shift his weight the right way)

  • LO has rolled over 4 times but it is still pretty random when he does.  Now that he can hold his head off the mat pretty well, he doesn't seem as interested in rolling over.  Oh well, I'm sure he'll put it all together again soon.  The first time he did it we were not expecting it b/c he had made no physical indication that he could even do it so even if she's not giving you an indication, it still could happen!

  • No rolling over here.  He hates tummy time and really won't attempt to roll over.  Just lays there and screams.  He does however attempt to roll over when he's on his back. His arm gets in the way so he doesn't make it all the way over.  Soon I think though.

  • I remember seeing him roll around 3 weeks and I was in shock.  He has done it a couple of times since (not sure how much intent was on therolling orjust trying toget out of the tummy position).  This morning he did it and actually seemed to do it on purpose, once in the crib and again on the play mat.  I tried to get him to do it again and he was not having it at all.

  • DD1 (a preemie no less) rolled from belly to back during tummy time at 6 weeks real age - I couldn't believe it, and it wasn't just once or twice - it was every time we put her on her belly.

DD2, born full term.... no where close. She barely even lifts her head during tummy time. She also screams the whole time.

  • Emma is rolling over, mainly from her back to her tummy but she will roll from tummy to back sometimes as well. She loves tummy time in the afternoons though... Now that she can roll changing her diaper is a tricky time; she tries to roll the second her onesie gets unsnapped!
