would you correct someone who spelled LO's name wrong?

Someone (family) spelled LO's name wrong. I corrected them, nicely, just like FYI and it turned into an argument because she tried to tell me its the same and it could be spelled either way. I'm getting annoyed. She's my kid, her name is spelled however I spelled it on her birth certificate, even if there are other acceptable spellings, that's not the way we spell it!  (FTR, DD's name is not youneeek with some weirdo spelling--- see siggy)
and i thought i loved you then <3<a href="http://daisypath.com/">Daisypath Anniversary tickersBaby Birthday Ticker Ticker

  • yes!  I would just say/write "we spell it ______".  if the person got weird about it I would ignore.
  • I would definitely correct them, we spelled Connor's name that way for a reason and I hate when people write "Conner" especially when I write his name on a FB picture!

    edited for terrible spelling

  • I have corrected people on the spelling.  We chose Elliana.  But apparently the more popular spelling is Eliana.  Whatev.  But what really ticks me off is how when I tell people her name they just say 'oh I will call her Ellie'.  Um, no you won't.  If I wanted to name her that then I would have.  However, when she is old enough to decide if she wants to be called Ellie, fine.  But until then she is Elliana.  It isn't a hard name to say people!

  • It is not up to your relative to arbitrarily decide how SHE wants to spell YOUR child's name...and it sure as hell ISN'T the same. I'd be annoyed, too. You specifically and purposely chose that spelling of your daughters name. She's a twat.

There are various, all acceptable, spellings of my name, but I WILL correct you if you spell it wrong. My name isn't Megan, Meagan, Meaghan, Meggin, or Megyn...it's MEGHAN.

  • I have this problem with my older daughter. Her name is Drusilla and we call her Dru. I always have to correct people when they spell her name "Drew". Many think she is named after Drew Barrymore, but shes actually named for a character on Buffy the Vampire Slayer lol. Im a huge fan of it. I would def correct someone

I love that you named your daughter this! Buffy is my favorite! Even my mom spells Lukas with a c sometimes. I only get annoyed when people ask "don't you worry about it being spelled wrong?"

  • I correct people all the time. DS's name is Seamus and people always try to spell it Shamus. When I correct them they get rude and say things like, "how do you get the SH sound out of that?" I usually remind them that my husbands name is Sean and they don't seem to have a problem figuring out the SH sound in that. People are weird when it comes to stuff like that.

You bet I'd correct people.  I would hope people would be respectful enough to acknowledge DD's correct name and spelling.

  • LOL! So I take it she wouldn't care if people spelled her name wrong?

    I'd absolutely correct them.

  • People are weird.

There may be multiple spellings, but I'm pretty sure your LO has ONE CORRECT spelling of her name. Anything else would be... not her name.

I would correct them. Every time. Lol.

I seriously can't believe someone would argue with you about how to spell your daughter's name.  What a piece of work!

  • I'm a wimp so I usually find a way to mention it or type it in an email so they'll hopefully notice. I can't believe she got pussed though! ( my LO's name could be Lyla/Lila/Lilah so I expect this problem will happen a lot for us. Oh well!

  • Yes, I would. my brother refers to Rowan as "Rowen" on facebook. The first time he did it, i pointed it out in a joking way and he responded with a douchey "I prefer to spell it this way." Since then he's done it a couple of times but I ignore it because honestly, he's a petty little twerp who probably does it to irritate me.

  • Absolutly.  Expecially if it was family.  I dont expect strangers to remember my kids names let alone my non-american spelling for DS2 however I do expect family to know how to spell it.  This was a huge topic for me when my ex sent me an email requesting something for my DS 2 and he misspelled DS's name.  DS is 8, by now he should know how to spell the name.  I was livid.

  • Ugh I hate when people spell my name wrong, and I always make sure to correct them. I hate when people spell my name "Michele"... it's MICHELLE. Two L's!

DD might end up with the same issue, although I'm not sure if her name (Kara) is more popular as 'Kara' or 'Cara'.

  • I correct family members, I don't correct others (a lot of people misspell his name).

  • I'm a wimp too and would probably find a way to passively aggressively correct them lol. But I can't believe someone would actually argue with you about it. Holy crap - like this family member...if her name is Jamie, would she really like it if people started addressing her as Jaymee? Doubtful.

  • Thankfully I don't think we'll have this problem with my LO (Logan is easy) but I've had this problem with my own name my whole life. I've had people spell it Kelly, Kellie, Kelley, Keli, etc. It's Kelli. It's really not that hard but combined with my maiden name, I had a hell of a time growing up. My last name has a silent K on the front. I don't think my parents ever considered people messing up my name since it's not really that uncommon (although maybe it was 25 years ago) but I made sure that we wouldn't have that sort of problem when we had kids.

  • ds name is Orion if it is family that misspell it i correct them or someone semi important .. strangers or people that aren't really that important for some reason want to spell it O'Rayan , O'Rayn, and a bunch of other O'R ways lol i figure it isn't worth the headache.
  • IncogNeato: How DO you spell it? I am planning to go with "Lila", as a combo of my grandmother's names: Lou and Isla, but I dropped the "s" because it seemed like I would just be asking for confusion. I didn't want "Lisla" to always be mistaken for Lisa or something similar.
  • A family member of mine is constatnly forgetting the last H on my daughter's name.  I have said something to her several times, and her reasoning is that she knows another Hannah who spells it w/o the final H!  Grr...  I don't care how someone else spells their name, I chose to include that final H for my daughter.  You have every right to correct someone, just don't be surprised when they act offended that you mentioned it!  people are so frustrating...sheesh :)
