Re: Clomid and a one blocked tube

  • Most women alternate sides when ovulating, but that's not necessarily a hard and fast rule (may O on same side more than once back to back)...

....so how can you and your OB/RE ensure that you ovulate from the side that's open?!?!

Are they going to try and open the tube at some point?

My OB insisted on the HSG before starting clomid so we would know if it was all clear ~ if not, the clomid was on the back burner until we could sort out the problems....

    Best of luck!

  • I did have an HSG, thats how I know the right tube is blocked, I have o on the side that is blocked for the last two months so with the clomid, we are hoping to get the left side going! We def can't ensure anything but it's the first step...I guess....

I have been trying to reseach procedures on opening the blocked tube, pretty expensive since insurance is not covering it and I heard that its a long recovery?!

Thats for the feedback and good luck to you as well!

They do the HSG prior to starting to Clomid to make sure both tubes aren't blocked, because there is no point in taking Clomid if you don't have atleast one open tube.

I have a blocked tube, and am currently on a Clomid + IUI cycle. The Clomid has helped me ovulate from my right side (left side is blocked), so it has worked in that regards. Are you being monitered on Clomid? The mid-cycle ultrasound will let you know if the Clomid is stimulating the correct ovary.

You also might consider getting a lap done to see if they can figure out what is the cause of your blocked tube, and maybe unblock it. Although I didn't go this route until I was ready to move on to IUI's.

  • I had an HSG and they found that one of my tubes was blocked.  My doctor strongly recommended that I have the lap to correct it because if the clomid didnt work and they sent me to a fertility specialist they would ask me to have the surgery anyways.  It was outpatient surgery and I just had to take it easy for a couple weeks.  My insurance covered most of it, so I can understand if you were hesitant because of the cost.  If I remember correctly the explanation of benefits showed the cost to insurance was close to $3k.   Good Luck and hope all works out for you!

I had both tubes blocked. My RE recommended at "tubalplasty" surgery to open  my tubes. No cutting - needles are used to clean out your tube(s). It was done at the hospital, but the recovery was fine. I was sore for a few days, but was able to BD that night.

Good luck! PM me if you have more questions.

Same for me - I have one (allegedly) blocked tube, based on my HSG results. The frustrating reality of HSGs is that if the tubes look unblocked, then they are unblocked, but if they look blocked, they are not necessarily blocked - could be a spasm.  Due to this uncertainty, I elected to try several rounds of Clomid + IUI, in an effort to avoid surgery and the related downtime. My first round of Clomid was this month, and I ovulated on the blocked side so the IUI was cancelled.  I'm hoping I ovulate on the unblocked side next month, although there's no guarantee. If I go 3 rounds of Clomid w/out success, I'll have the lap surgery and try again.  GL!

  • I will be monitored but not this cycle since It falls on the weekend, so no ultrasound. We are just going to go with it and hope for the best!

I have read a lot of different things on the lap procedure. One, recovery time is long. Two, expensive since it's not covered by insurance. Three, IF I go that route, the procedure may not work and tube will close again.

What was your experience like with the lap Citygirl?

  • Please keep me updated Sterling on the upcoming cycle. I wish I was monitored this cycle to see if I ovulate on the unblocked side (weekend)! Good luck to you!

That happened to me on what was supposed to be my first IUI too, it sucks! Did you only have one dominant follie? I only had the one on the blocked side in my cancelled cycle, so I asked to up my Clomid dosage to 100 mg next month. This worked out great for me, as I had about three viable follies on 100 mg, only two on the unblocked side, so it was the perfect response. Maybe you can consider doing the same for next month? GL whatever you decide!

Here are my thoughts...my recovery time was not bad at all, I took off 2 days from work, and then worked from home for the next 2, and was fine by next week. Yes, it is surgery and you won't be back to normal in only a week, but you should only be out of TTC for one month, if that.

My lap was absolutely covered by insurance, and I think most plans will cover it bc it's not considered IF "treatment".

I personally think the lap procedure is important so you can see what's going on inside your body, and then work your plan of action around it. A lot of lap's find endometriosis and are able to clear away the endo so your tube can be opened up. Then, not only do you have two working tubes, you have a diagnosis so you know how to treat your IF more effectively.
