Is Anyone Here Still Eating Deli Meat?

I eat it sometimes but not that often. I just had some in my scrambled eggs that I cooked. My doc said to me that I can eat anything that I want for the most part as long as its in moderation. Its just always in the back of my mind that Im doing something wrong when I crave some sliced cut up ham in my eggs. Any of you still eating deli meat? Hope im not the only one...lol

I do on occasion. My OB said it's just fine as long as I'm getting it somewhere "reputable".

  • I have when I'm traveling and there really are no other options.  I do always ask them to heat it up though, just so I don't feel as bad.

  • I'm not. But I wasn't eating much prior to pregnancy either.

  • Yep. I just make sure it's either very fresh from a reputable source or heated up really well. I do limit my intake (as well as my bacon intake) because of the nitrates.

I eat it maybe once a week.

  • Yes but I heat it up.. I bring a sandwhich for lunch practically every day.
  • Yup, I had a roast beef and cheddar and a turkey sub this week.  I do heat up my meat and then broil the sub just to make me feel better.

  • I've eaten it a majority of my second trimester for lunch, turkey sandwiches were a huge craving of mine, so I just made sure I microwaved it for about 20 seconds before I made my sandwich... Problem solved...

  • I have stopped going to Subway and will only get my turkey sandwiches from an Italian bakery and deli since I feel they are more reputable and clean. Then again, I much prefer them to Subway anyways. I do eat ham, pickle, and cream cheese roll-ups, and just make sure that it is from a good deli and it doesn't sit in the refrigerator for very long.

While I don't eat a ton of it, I don't heat it up before I do. My doc said it's fine.

  • Yes. I just heat it up first. Eggs cook quickly so I'm not sure adding the ham to them would heat the ham adequately - I would dice and fry up the ham first, then add the eggs.

I do occasionally, I can't tell DH though, he's neurotic about what I should and shouldn't be eating.

This, exactly.. I eat it if I want it. I also enjoy a good soda from time to time if I crave it.

  • If it came from your fridge where the temp was below 40 then it is perfectly fine. Getting it out somewhere may be risky as you have no idea how cold their meat stays.

    Ditto all of this.

  • My doctor never said I couldn't have deli meat. I haven't really eaten much lately but I was always wanting subway in the first tri. I don't think deli meat, hot dogs, and such are that big of a deal. I think my doctor would have really stressed it if so.

The only things my doctor said was limit caffeine and certain kinds of fish.

  • Every once and a while I will get a craving for an italian hoagie and will eat one. A hoagie once a month isn't going to hurt anyone.
  • But you're cooking with your eggs, so I think that's ok. I won't eat any deli meat that I haven't heated until it was sizzling, and that was only 2 times this whole pregnancy.  As long as you heat it to kill that bacteria, that's what the problem is and you should be ok!

I'm still eating lunch meat. My doctor said it was fine (along with soft cheese, some caffeine, etc.)

  • I ate deli meat during my first pregnancy, and during this one...and (gasp!) I don't heat it up most of the time (only when DH is looking because he is like the pregnancy police Confused).

  • Yes. I actually talked to my doctor about this one because before I got pregnant I ate deli meat all the time and when I said that I wasn't supposed to eat deli meat to my cousin she thought I was nuts. She had her son just 3 years ago and had never been told that she couldn't have deli meat. My doctor said that if you are heating it up, like cooking it in your eggs or in my case heating up roast beef to make a french dip, there is no risk in eating deli meat. Because deli meat is precooked meat, kind of like hot dogs, it's for the most part safe to eat but because it does hold a higher risk of food born diseases they tell you to be aware. I personally have been eating unheated deli meat, turkey and cheese sandwiches, throughout my pregnancy and never had a problem. This is just one of those things that they feel they need to mention but I wouldn't get to worked up about it. My mom used to eat uncooked deli meat everyday at work and she had two completely healthy, although slightly weird :), children. ;)
  • I ate tons of deli meat throughout my entire pregnancy - roast beef sandwiches, subway, etc. Never heated. My doctor did not tell me that I shouldn't.

  • Yes, but rarely since I didn't eat it much pre-pregnancy either. When I do eat it, I just nuke it for a minute or so.

  • I eat it sometimes, I do nuke it in the microwave for about 15 secs at 165 or higher.

    I copied this from Babycenter.com:

    " Lindsay L. Whitcomb

    certified information and referral specialist

It's not safe for pregnant women to eat deli meats (such as ham, turkey, salami, and bologna) or hot dogs unless the food has been thoroughly heated and is steaming hot. These foods can cause a form of food poisoning called listeriosis.

Listeriosis is caused by a type of bacteria called Listeria monocytogenes. Heating deli meats until steaming hot will kill the bacteria if it's present.

Listeriosis is especially dangerous during pregnancy. Most people don't get sick when they eat food contaminated with listeria. But healthy pregnant women are more likely than other healthy adults to get listeriosis and are more likely to become dangerously ill from it.

The flu-like symptoms of listeriosis can sometimes advance to potentially life-threatening meningitis (infection of the membranes covering the brain, with symptoms such as severe headache and stiff neck) and blood infection. Contact your healthcare provider if you're pregnant and you develop any of these symptoms."

I hope that helps. Happy Eating! :)

  • I haven't, as of yet, because I have been able to find just as satisfying alternatives in all of the situations I would normally eat deli meat in. I make pb&j sandwiches when I don't have much time to make a lunch for work and when at subway or jimmy johns (which I had today) they had good alternatives. They have a pretty good vegetarian sandwich and the tuna, which I had today, was awesome. It's not really become an issue for me yet.

Caffeine on the other hand, is another story. I had been trying to abstain from it completely as much as possible, but in the last week or so have been indulging in a small cup of coffee or caffeinated hot tea at breakfast or around dinner. From what I read it was only 3 or more cups a day that would possibly have negative effects and I never drank that much even pre-pregnancy.

  • I eat it too. It's one of my healthier cravings so I give in occasionally. I try to at least eat it on toasted sandwiches rather than straight from the fridge, but I'm not sure that it's any safer that way...
  • Yes, I started eating lunch meat again after doing a bit of research.  The risk of listeria for pregnant women is 0.014%.  That's 20x higher than non-pregnant people, yes, but still extremely low.  Additionally, lunchmeat isn't the only thing that can carry listeria; mayo has raw egg in it, any mayo-based salads that are served cold after being heated could carry this.  And spinach greens have been known to carry e coli which is far more dangerous than listeria.  So, knowing that it's an extremely small risk and that while avoiding lunch meat you're likely eating something else that could potentially be dangerous in some way, I just eat what I would like in moderation (with the exception of low fat ice cream!) and pray before eating.  So far so good.  Also, just fyi, non-pasteurized cheese is illegal in the US.  So no need to worry about soft cheeses unless you are traveling internationally.  You can get non-pasteurized via illegal sources but it's expensive so unless you're at a specialty market or very upscale "foodie" place you can safely eat brie, goat cheese, blue cheese, etc.  Eat on ladies!
  • I eat deli meat all the time.  With my first pregnancy and now this one.  No problems at all.
  • I'm not going to be obsessed and paranoid about this stupid crap about listeria.  That is only mostly hot dogs if not cooked to steaming.
