I thought 8-10 was average or something along those lines so that's all we were really thinking about. DD said more like 30 around that point and DS maybe like 15-20 at the most.
DS1 was a slow talker. She wanted 6 words at 18 months or we would discuss EI. He got them the week before his appt. Soon after he was stringing words. Some kids just explode.
My pedi wanted 10 words, but DS could only say maybe 5-7 when he hit 18 months. But by the end of 18 months, he had had a language explosion and was up to 40+ words.
DD has an evaluation for this tomorrow as she is 18 months and not really talking. I think it might be hearing related due to the amount of ear infections she has had...we will see....

Our pedi just wanted to know that he was talking-- he didn't ask how many. DS says at least 30, maybe 40 words or so... it definitely was an explosion when he started to talk.

Man, I was never worried about how much/little DS has been talking, but now ya'll are starting to freak me out a bit. He's almost 18 months and kind of says hot, cheese, and juice. I feel like he's picked these all up in the last week or two though, so hopefully this pattern will continue. He also says ut-oh, mommy, and daddy really well and has been saying those for quite a while. We'll see what the Dr. says at his 18 mo appt.
I can tell I've clearly been off the bump too much lately! I've completely lost track of all the things I'm supposed to be worrying about!
Ditto exactly. But at xmas when I saw my cousin (an early childhood intervention specialist with masters) she said we should be looking for 50 words at 18 months. At the time A was 14 months and only saying 5-10 so I remember thinking "Uhhhh...." but right around 18 months her vocab exploded and she started repeating everything.
The form we fill out at the 18 month appointment asks if they can say 7-10 words. My daughter is 17 months ( I peeked at the form already to see if she could do everything on it!) and she doesn't say that many. She says maybe 5 words? Her favorites are "more", "hi", and occasionally "ball".
DS's pediatrician asked if DS said 10-20 words. I have a gabby little guy & he has always been above the curve. At 18 months he was at about 50 words. Now, at 20 months, he's close to 90 & putting 2 & 3 words together.

Re: How many words did the doc say your 18 mth old should say?
Our pedi said the exact same thing and my son can also only say 5.

I think 9 individual words.
By 2yr. appoitnment, they should put two words together, "Mama Juice," or "Dada Work."
DS is 23mo and has been babbling for months saying 9 words at 18mo appointment. Only in the past two weeks, he said, "I Love You."

At DD's 18-month checkup, Dr asked if she knew 20 words. She didn't, but she had a little over 10 and none of us (me, DH or Dr) were overly concerned.
She is a little over 19 months now and I think she has about 20 words
