Cord Blood Banking

I've been getting a TON of those pamphlets in the mail from various different cord blood banks - anyone going to save their LO's cord blood?  If so, please recommend your bank and why.  I'm a FTM and am on the fence.

TIA!

No, it's pretty much a scam in most cases. Here's a good read:

I disagree that it is a scam.  It might be rarely needed, but that does not make it a scam.  My doctor recommends it, as do my friends' OBs, pedis, and several nurses.  I am using CBR, because it is a large company that has been around a while, and my friends have been happy with the service they've gotten.

  • as far as I've heard (I haven't done extensive research) you can use cord blood from one child for anyone related to that child. So if you got cord blood saved from baby 2, it could save baby 1, 3, etc.

My friend has 4 kids and only saved the cord blood from one kid.

  • I would guess anyone that recommends it is getting a kickback, but I'm suspicious like that.

We're doing delayed cord clamping and putting the blood in the baby, where it belongs.

  • I like the idea, but the cost is just too much.  My hospital banks it for free for general use, I will probably do that

Sorry, I've done extensive research on the subject and also agree it's a pretty much a scam preying on the fears of parents.  And yes, although it's true that it can be used for other family members, it's typically the bone marrow that is needed which can be retrieved from the child themselves.  It does not have to be the CB.

Just do your research!!!!  Don't read the stuff from the banks.  They will have you banking in a minute!  CNN has some good articles.  Just google the pros and cons and try to read as many OBJECTIVE articles as you can.

If you really want to bank, I'd recommend public donation.  I think it goes for the greater good of the science and research behind it all.  There is also a high probability that you can actually get your own child's CB back if needed and it can actually be used.  FYI...it's very rare that a child can use his/her own cord blood.

Also, before making a decision, I'd also recommend looking into delayed cord clamping.  There are so many immediate benefits to waiting until the cord stops pulsing to cut it.

  • I am using Viacord.  I already have it set up.  The reason that we chose to bank the cord blood is because three years ago I was diagnosed with MS and since there is such little known about the disease and they do not know if it is genetic, I want to do it just in case it can help any of my children.

  • Ive been thinking about CBR, I would really like to save it but I am concerned about the cost.. has anyone talked with any banks and know about how much it costs? I have no idea what to expect so any approximations would help!

  • we are banking with viacord.  both large banks (viacord and cbr) will run you between 1700-2200 initially, depending on what kind of coupon/deal you can find at certain times of the year, and between 125-150 each year after for storage.  i disagree with the pp that says it's a scam, but i DO feel that the literature the banks themselves put out is somewhat sketchy in that it claims to be able to cure more than it might actually be able to.  we decided to do it mainly out of guilt.  on the rare, off chance that cord blood can save our baby down the line, we don't want to have to look at her and think that $2k could save her life and we didn't spend it.  which is probably what keeps these banks in business, guilt of new parents.

  • Cord blood is the blood left over in your baby?s umbilicalcord immediately after birth. Your practitioner harvests the blood in a quick, easy, and painless procedure. The reason this blood is so valuable is becauseit contains stem cells, which are cells that have the ability todevelop into any type of specialized cell in the blood and immune system andreplace or repair these types of damaged cells throughout the body. Bankingyour baby's cord blood ensures that if your child is ever in need of a cordblood transplant it will available for your exclusive use.Affordability can be  a factor in deciding whetheryou are able to bank your newborn's cord blood. At  M.A.Z.E Cord BloodLaboratories, we are determined to  keep our fees low and never charge anannual fee. Yes it can be expensive but if you really feel you want tohave it as insurance, you can ask that it be put on your gift registry. FIrst off, do your research and find the bankthat has no additional yearly fees and one that is accredited.  Hereis a  non commercial site that helps you do he research, and here is avideo of a success story. Alsofind one that is reputable, it doesnt have to be near your home. Just like anyinsurance, pray that you have it but pray that you never (ever) need it.Good luck to all
