Baby Names

Gwenyth vs. Gwyneth

WDYT is the most common spelling?  I think the first one, but it's Gwyneth Paltrow.   Not the reason for us choosing the name but probably the one everyone thinks of...I'm slightly turned off by a name that I'll always have to spell.  Our DD1 is Lydia and if this baby is a girl we're debating Elise Catherine, Amelia Catherine or Gwenyth..TIA

Re: Gwenyth vs. Gwyneth

  • I like Gwyneth spelled this way, but of your choices my favorite is Elise Catherine.

  • I prefer Gwyneth as that's the way that I pronounce it.  I also love Elise.

  • Gwyneth is the traditional spelling. It comes from the Welsh gwyn, meaning "white, fair, blessed". Yes

I don't like Gwenyth at all. It's not even in the same ballpark as Gwyneth to me.

If you are looking for a name with Gwen at the beginning, you could go for Gwendolen. Yes

  • Gwenyth looks terrible.

  • I would say Gwyneth but also really like Elise.

  • Definitely spell it Gwyneth if you decide to go with that one.

Out of your others I like Elise Catherine.

  • I think Gwyneth, too.

Gwenyth looks wrong to me for some reason; it's even hard for me to type in that order because I'm so used to the other.

  • agree with all PPs. Gwyneth looks the best and is the way I would spell it. I love that name. AND I like the others too! Great choices- but I would go with Gwyneth

    This.

  • They're pronounced differently. One is Gwen-ith, the other is Gwin-eth. It depends on how you like to say it. I prefer Gwenyth.

  • Gwendolyn is on my short list for my great aunt.  (that's how hers was spelled).

I think I like Gwenyth better . Do you plan on shortening it to Gwen/Gwyn?

  • I love the name Gwen and wanted it for both of my girls but could never decide on a longer version and spelling. Gwendolyn was definitely out.

    Here's my thoughts:

I like the look of Gwyneth better but would want the nn to be Gwen.

Gwen alone isn't enough of a name, imo. Gwenyth looks off and Gweneth looks weird too.

For some reason, I have no idea how to spell this name which is why I've never cared for it. Both look fine to me. Your other two choices are much better. I especially like Elise.

    i agree.

i think gwenyth (gwen-ith) sounds better.

  • I like Elise Catherine best from your list.  I like Gwyneth, but I love Gwendolyn and prefer it.

  • If this LO was a girl her name would be Gwyneth (which I believe is the correct spelling).  Initially we planned on Gwyneth Eleanor but SIL is having a girl a few weeks before our boy arrives and she's naming her Avery Eleanor so our next thought was Gwyneth Beverly or Gwyneth Victoria (all of our mn choices will be family names).

Obviously I love Gwyneth, but I actually prefer Elise Catherine with your DD1s name and I think Elise is a gorgeous name as well.  I'm not a huge fan on Amelia.
