Irish Middle Name for Girl

Our daughter is due on St. Patty's Day and if she by chance actually arrives then, I want to give her an Irish Middle Name.

Her first name is either going to be Sophia or Lila.  Any suggestions?  The two I know off of the top of my head are Kathleen, which I hate, and Claire, which I like.

TIA!

Re: Irish Middle Name for Girl

  • Fiona or Brigid (like Bridget) are both nice Irish girl names.

Some truley Irish names can be complicated to pronounce, but I recommend googling Irish Baby Girl Names for some more unique names.

  • I like Claire, too. A less common Irish name that I like for a middle name is Maeve.

  • I thought Claire was French (but love it either way). Some Irish names are Bridget, Caitlin, Erin, Keira, Maura, Quinn, Shae, or Shannon.

  • Damn, I guess Claire is French!  I thought I saw it on a list someone for Irish.

I really want something with an American spelling.  I did go to an Irish baby name website and I couldn't pronounce anything!

I looove Miriam, but our last name starts with a M, and I hate double letter names.

  • Actually, the mn is going to be Katherine if she isn't born on St Patrick's day.  I guess that doesn't count as Irish though.

Well, technically there is County Claire in the west of Ireland,  but as a name, no, it isn't Irish. :)

My biggest suggestion is to stick to common Anglicization of Irish names, like Caitlin, Eileen, Alana/Alannah, Bridget, Katherine, Doreen, Moira/Maura, Norah, Patricia, Sheila, etc.

Or if you are more into Irish/American names, there is always Erin or Colleen, though these are not commonly used in Ireland as Erin is the name of the country and Colleen means "girl".

I love love love Imogen, DH shot it down right away though

  • I loved Aiobhanne when I was pg, but would have spelled it "Aven." I like it because it is uncommon, but still sounds familiar...

  • Our little girl's middle name is Teagan--it's Gaelic for "little poet."
  • I like Claire with your FNs.  I love the name Ainsley.
  • I think Niamh or Aisling would be pretty!

Hah! That works! I have a good girlfriend named Erin who just married her sweetheart, a boy named Erin. She says it's been interesting, especially with trying to decide to change her last name to his or not. I think she is going to hyphenate so they can differentiate between the two!

  • While Claire isn't Irish in origin - it is very popular in Ireland.  As many saints names are.

I think Patricia as a mn would be great if she's born on St. Patrick's Day or Brigid (Irish spelling but still easy to pronounce) or Bridget.

  • Isn't it spelled County Clare or am I just confused?  Anyway I think that Maeve sounds really good with either of those names and the spelling isn't crazy different from what we have here.
