Is our Baby Name really that bad?

We didn't tell anyone our name before our son was born.  So when our child was born and we named him Ezra James, almost every member of my family made it well known that they really dislike the name.  Ezra is hebrew and means helper and has a lot of strong meaning for my husband and I.  But is it really that bad?  Hope I didn't ruin my child's life!

Re: Is our Baby Name really that bad?

  • Absolutely not! I think it's a great name! One of my coworkers named her son Ezra. I think it's fantastic. Has great meaning. It's unique, but not so unique that it's crazy. Tell your family to bugger off.

  • Nope! Love it! Some people just can't help but be rude...especially when it comes to comments and babies. Our LO is named after her father's Grandmother "Sadie", I had someone tell me that it was odd and that her dog was named Sadie. Whatever. If you like it and it has meaning to you then that's all that should matter.

  • I love the name.  Different, easy to spell, can't really be shortened into something else and I can't think of any rhyming taunts that children might use.

I'm a teacher, it is really difficult to find a name that I like.

  • I think it's a great name.  Your family is ridiculous, especially now that you've already chosen.  Jerks.
  • I think it's an awesome name.  And if it has special meaning to you and your husband, than that's what matters.  Don't worry about what your family says.  It's your child, not theirs!!!

  • It's pretty crappy that your family is being so vocal about their dislike.  As family, I'd hope they would just be supportive.  After all, you're the parents, it's your decision.  You know how the saying goes: "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all".

  • I love the name!  I tried to convince DH to name our son Ezra, but we ended up agreeing on Judah. Maybe next time.

PS so many people made comments about DS's name, too. Oh well.

  • I'm not a fan but I don't think it's bad at all. Sometimes it's better to just tell your family so it has time to grow on them. We named DS Mason before it became so popular so at the time our families hadn't heard it before. They were not fans of it at all but it has since grown on them and they think it's so cool now.

  • I think Ezra is a beautiful name! I love Hebrew names though, as evidenced by the name above my ticker :)
  • I really like it too!  Be glad that you didn't tell your family before your son was born in case it would have made you second guess yourself.
  • One of my favorite teachers ever is named Ezra, so maybe I just have positive associations with it, but I really like it!
  • I truly love your name choice. Ezra is short, sweet, classic, Biblical and underused. James is a true classic.

They're crazy and they'll get over it.

This captured exactly how I feel too! I was hesitant to tell people our name before DS was born, because when it's a potential name, people feel like they have the right to throw in their 2 cents. It's utterly BALLSY to express their dislike once the name is on the birth certificate and is connected to an actual, lovable baby!! Two thumbs down to them. Your baby's name rules.

  • Nope, not terrible at all.  People have had some bad comments about Conrad and Margot too, but we like the names, so we just ignore it.

  • It's different, but definitely not bad.  Ignore people who are rude enough to say something now that he's here.

  • Ezra is a fantastic name! My professor named her little boy Ezra and I just love it. Ezra has spiked in popularity recently: https://www.babynamewizard.com/voyager#prefix=ezra&ms=false&exact=false As it very well should! It's a great name and your son will love his name. Your family is simply being ridiculous.

  • I LOVE the name Ezra!!  It was a top pick on our list...try not to let anyone get you down- your baby is perfect, name and all!
  • I really like the name. My DS name is Gabrius and DD is named Amaiya. Trust me I know how you feel. Maybe we have some of the same family members. LMAO Big Smile

  • I absolutely LOVE your son's name! Ezra was on or top 5 as well, but he didn't seem like an Ezra. His name is Oliver Indigo.

  • Ezra is a beautiful name and the best part, it's YOUR baby's name. no matter what your family says, you're the one who carried your son for nine months and you and your husband are the ones who will be raising him until he's an adult. the name has great meaning for you and your husband and your family should respect that.

    Congratulations on your son Ezra.

  • I like that full name very much actually!

We also went with a very Hebrew / Jewish name - Elias Matisyahu. We call him Matti for now...

We got a lot of flak for it, but I love it!

I love this name!! DH wouldn't go for Oliver, but it is one of my favourites!

  • While it's not my style at all it's also not that bad. Your family is meshuga! Don't let it phase you. Your kid, your name choice. FWIW, I have always loved the name James. I would have named one of our boys James, but it's also the name of an ex-boyfriend of mine so it probably wouldn't have gone over well with DH.

  • Our daycare provider's son is named Ezra. While I thought it was unusual, by no means is it going to ruin your child's life. My mom was always way too opinionated about names. She told me that Ada would have to "live that name down for the rest of her life."  Everyone else that hears it loves it!  It's your child; and you are the ones that will have to say it a million times a day. If you like it, who cares what everyone else thinks. :)
  • I love it. I tried to talk DH into it, but no go.

  • It probably strikes them as really unusual. Once they get to know Ezra, it will just be his name, and not "weird" at all.
