Trouble TTC

No Ovulation, Clomid, IUI

I am 25 and have been ttc for 2 months. My cycles have been long (36 days) so I went to the Dr. to find out why. Turns out I am not ovulating (blood test confirms). She is suggesting that I start clomid next month (50mg) and do IUI. I have a 2 part question:

1. Can ovulation come back on its own eventually, or once its gone, its gone?

2. Has anyone had any luck on clomid or heard good stories?

I am really scared we will never have  a baby.

Thanks!

P.S. I have been tested for thyroid problems, the change, etc  and all came back fine. I have had an ultrasound and everything looks good. I have not been on Birth control for 4 years.

Re: No Ovulation, Clomid, IUI

  • Have you ever charted? It can show you if you are ovulating or not. What day did you have your b/w to see if you were ovulating? It could be possible you were tested too early.

Clomid did not work for me, so I do not have a success story. You need to be monitored while taking clomid. (ultrasounds & bloodwork) You really should have an HSG beforehand, so you know your tubes are open. Your husband should also have a SA.

You should check out the TTGP newbie link, which talks about charting. You may find that helpful. Also, please read this link below about clomid.

Love & luck to my 3TC girls. Congrats to Omega-The boys are here!
If there's one thing I've learned while waiting my turn,
it's that in each life some rain falls but you also get some sun.
After 2 years & 2 losses, our little man arrived 8-2011.
  • Definately start to lurk on this board as it is a wealth of information.  I do not know any answers to your first question but many people have success with clomid and iui's.  Good luck!

  • don't get down-hearted yet. I was also not ovulating for no apparent reason and had no success with 50mg or 100mg of Clomid, but the past 2 months of 150mg have been working. We're not doing IUI or any of that yet, it doesn't need to get that intense right away. You have to see if there is a Rx that will make you ovulate first. BBT charting is the easiest way to alleviate your nerves too because you can see sooner than the day 23 testing if you are ovulating--and use opks!.  :) Good luck!!

    1. Can ovulation come back on its own eventually, or once its gone, its gone? Yes, you can ovulate again on your own.

    2. Has anyone had any luck on clomid or heard good stories? Yes, women get PG on Clomid but I would not recommend going on Clomid with an OB/GYN because they don't typically monitor you. You run the risk of high order multiples when you're not being monitored to see how many follicles you're developing. You'd probably be better off getting back on BCP's for a month or two to help regulate your cycle again.

I am really scared we will never have  a baby. I think this a pre-mature fear at this point as 36 days isn't really all that long of a cycle. I have a close friend who goes 60+ days sometimes in b/t cycles and she doesn't have PCOS and had no trouble becoming PG. I am really astonished your Dr. is already steering you down the IUI route this soon.

    Thanks!

  • Just like in your other post- I think you are wildly overreacting.

All blood tests and ultrasound came back fine- forget the intervention and give yourself a chance to get pregnant.

36 days is not long at all.  And seeing as this is a dr. so willing to dive right into clomid I'd be willing to bet they did a p4 test on day 21 and said- nope not ovulating.

    Find a new dr.

    Educate yourself.

It's been two months, not two years- chill.

Fuuck TTC - I'm moving on.

"Ew. I've read all of two posts from you, and you stink like rotting garbage."
  • Wow. You do realize that 36 days is not really that long of a cycle, right? And you are 25 with no known issues? You need to relax and give it a little longer, about 10 months longer. Make a conscious effort to be patient, don't listen to that quack, and pick yourself up a copy of TCOYF.

  • Some of these points have already been made, but they need to be re-iterated:

-Your cycles are not very long at all. That can be normal.

-If your blood work was done too early in your cycle (for example, day 21) you may have ovulated *after* the blood was drawn.

-Read up on charting your waking temperatures at fertilityfriend.com . It will help you determine if you're ovulating. Get to know your body. You owe yourself that at least.

-Even if you didn't ovulate the particular cycle you had blood work on, it doesn't you mean you don't ovulate in general or that you won't ovulate on your own again.

-Two months TTC is way too damn early to go on Clomid. It's a serious drug with serious side effects (a number of uncomfortable side effects as well as many *dangerous* ones including growing way too many eggs and getting pregnant with way too many babies, or ending up in the hospital, or developing painful and dangerous ovarian CYSTS).

-If you make the bad decision to go on Clomid now, your doctor will likely not monitor you properly. Monitoring is essential to make sure the side effects don't get so bad that you'd never get pregnant with Clomid anyway. Without monitoring, you could have uterine lining so thin that an embryo could not implant, or you cervical mucus could change so that it's not hospitable to sperm (though I see you mentioned IUI). Why continue to take such a drug month after month if there's no chance of pregnancy?

-Getting an infertility diagnosis now (as may happen with the IUIs and such) when you're not really infertile can harm you more than help you, insurance-wise. Certain things may be denied later on.

-Many annovulatory women (if indeed you're among them) have lots of success ovulating and getting pregnant with meds. In the grand scheme of fertility problems, it's usually one of the easier fixes.

-Before Clomid (and IUI) it's recommended for you and your hubby to have lots of tests to make sure his sperm and your tubes and uterus are okay. Once again, I think that's jumping the gun, but there you have it.

    -Good luck.

  • I agree with the other ladies.  Give it some time and do some more homework.  If you're concerned about not ovulating try charting to see if they tested you too early.

Also, was your prolactin level checked?
High prolactin can cause you to not ovulate or delay ovulation and can be treated without clomid/IUI.

  • And where did you find this doc? Another looser, I had one like that,,,

Firstable, Clomid and IUI is for those who has been diagnosed w infertility and for that you need to try more than 2 months (each good doc would know it).

    Test your husband.

Eat good, loose some weight or gain, quit smoking, be happy and you O will be back.

I used to have 3 periods per year w/o pills. They diagnosed me w PCOS. I lost weight, quit smoking and parties and my period become more and more regular and w/ O (Now its 36d if ovulating). I tried 3 regular OB/GYN but they couldn't help me . The first two never checked my hormones but last one did and they came out normal, so only reason they still put down PCOS was my ovaries. We TTC for 2 years, so I end up at Uconn RC and after ultrasound they told me my ovaries doesn't look different then any other my age girl. I will have my tubes checked next month and then we will see next step.

But anyways the first step would be to learn your body: start taking BT in the mornings, check the mucus, watch cramping in the middle of the cycle which usually means an ovulation, start OT at around day 14 etc. The blood test could be done not on time so it isnt something you should pay attention at all.

    AND FIND NEW DOCTOR!!!

,,,it took two years to get there,,,
