Babies: 0 - 3 Months

I hate our Pedi and don't google the following....(long)

So, K had to have blood work done last week (they took blood from her arm - talk about traumatizing for both of us) due to all of her issues and a fever she had.

Our pediatrician sent us to Quest for the blood draw.  I questioned why we weren't going to the Texas Children's lab as she had mentioned a few weeks ago (when we were having different lab work done) that she didn't like Quest to take infant?s blood.  She said it wasn't an issue and Quest would be fine so off to Quest we went.  I was told no news was good news.

We never heard anything.

Well I called the Pedi office today b/c I need copies of K's charts for our appointment with a GI tomorrow - this appointment was just scheduled today and we kind of got in the back door with my cousin's connections (he's a pedi GI in another state) so the specialist doesn?t have her charts yet.

So, the Pedi calls me back and tells me that she will get the charts copied and that she just got K's blood work results in (yeah right, I don't buy it, she forgot to call me with the results) and that we need to go to Texas Children's to have the blood work re-done b/c K's white blood cell count and platelet count both came back very low.  Oh, and that she doesn?t trust Quest's analysis.

WhyTF did you have us go to Quest in the first place then?  So now K has to get blood taken again tomorrow.

Oh, and don't google low WBC and platelets in infants - pretty much every link has the dreaded cancer word in it....yeah, I'm praying that Quest was wrong b/c I seriously cannot handle if her numbers are indeed low and the possibilities we may be facing....

I am trying not to freak out and am also scheduling our 4 month well baby with a new Pedi - I cannot stand to see our crazy pedi one more time.

I just want to catch a freakin break and I want my baby girl to be healthy and happy.

  • I was just popping over to 3tri (Bump send me here even though EB isn't born yet) and saw your post. I am SO sorry to hear this!!  Here's hoping Quest made a major screw up or it's something random.  I cannot believe the back and forth you all have had!

  • I'm so sorry you're going through this right now with sweet Kate.

I don't have much to say or anything that I can do, but I believe that God doesn't give you more than you can handle and I will be praying for you and your family.

Everything will work out fine and you will figure out what is going on with kate, and get it fixed so you can move forward and enjoy watching your little girl grow up!

  • WOW... that really is scary. Hoping for the best for Kate.

  • That sucks.

But...If my Pedi was to contradict himself on the validity/trustworthiness of something like a lab, I wouldn't hesitate to switch pediatricians.

  • I'm so sorry!  I can't imagine how traumatic all of that must be for both of you :o(  Don't worry too much about low blood count being cancer, if she has GI issues it could to be be due to malabsorbtion of nutrients.  Have they tested her for celiac disease?  Also Quest does take forever in returning results, so that could very well be true, but she shouldn't have sent you to Quest if she doesn't trust their analyses.

  • Good call in seeking a new pedi. That's ridiculous.

FWIW, I have had bad experiences with Quest labs when I've had to take Torin there, so I am hoping that they just screwed up K's lab work and that her numbers aren't really low. I'm keeping you guys in my thoughts!

  • I'm so sorry you and Kate are going through this! Hopefully the results with Quest are off, and you will have reassuring answers (and a better pedi) soon!

  • So sorry that just flat out sucks. I hope your LO is fine and there is nothing to worry about.

Yeah, if your pedi suggested a few weeks ago that she did not like Quest to do infant test then you should have stuck to that. You can have lab test done anywhere you want, you do not have to go where they suggest, just make sure your insurance covers where you go or that you know what the non covered price will be.

Celiac has not come up as a possibility yet.  We have had an upper GI, swallow study, ultrasound and blood work to rule out pyloric stenosis, and have already been diagnoses with milk and soy protein intolerance as well as severe reflux .  She is currently on amino acid based formula due to the MSPI and prevacid for the reflux.

I will ask about celiac at our appointment on Wednesday.

I am not to the point of totally freaking out about the C word - it just wasn't what I was expecting to see in the google results.  Just praying the original results are wrong.

  • Sorry you and Kate are going through this. I hope everything turns out ok.

  • I can't believe your pedi didn't call you right away with those results!! Good call on finding a new pedi. I lurk a lot but don't post too often and I know you have been through a lot before/with that beautiful girl.  I will say a little prayer for Kate but I also wanted to tell you I have diagnosed myself and my daughter with many diseases through the use of Dr. google.  I've never been correct!

  • Scary and frustrating stuff Sad Good on you for going with another pedi. I hope everything works out ok and that those results were just part of a mix up.

  • Oh my gosh I am so angry for you.  We've had all our lab work done at children's and I wouldn't go anywhere else.  Definitely ditch that pedi fast.  I would rec you ours b/c I'm in love with him, but we just moved up to the woodlands and he's here and I doubt you want to make that drive.

I will definitely be praying for a healthy baby and some answers for you guys.

  • So sorry you're going through this. I know this is easy said than done, but try to think positive and stay calm. GL with everything.. praying for you and your family.
  • Thoughts and prayers...I hope the test results are wrong. Your little girl is beautiful. Keep positive and strong. When our little girl was having problems it helped to keep a list of questions with us so we didn't forget to ask anything and we could write down anything we needed. Hopefully you get answers soon.
