bare breastfeeding in public????

I work in a doctors' office (and it's not an obgyn or pediatric office). There was a woman who was bare breastfeeding in the main waiting area. Indifferent  You could see the areola not to mention the whole breast. And what is she going to do if the baby suddenly pops off of the nipple?? I don't get it. I am all for breastfeeding but isn't that a little too much nudity in public?  It didn't bother her though apparently. I would have asked for a room that wasn't being used. What do you gals think?

Re: bare breastfeeding in public????

  • good for her.

they are boobs. nothing scary. we all have em.

  • I think breastfeeding is a very natural thing. I think that society thinks that nudity is such a bad thing but honestly we came into this world naked and if you go to any other country its widely accepted. I personally think its beautiful and natural for a woman to breastfeed and if someone is uncomfortable...then dont look!  Its she feels comfortable enough to do it then more power to her.

  • Honestly I think that showing that much in public is inappropriate. I prefer to use a different room (just a personal choice) or at least to have a cover on.

     Look familiar?

    They are called breasts.

    Your welcome.

This exactly.  Good for her.  no, I don't think it's "too much nudity" and she shouldn't feel compelled to hide herself while she feeds her newborn.

  • I think it's ridiculous to get riled up about the fact that a woman had her breast out feeding her baby.

I say more power to her.

  • Oh I bet this turns into a hot topic! I am against it myself. I don't really take offense to anyone that decides to bf in public, that's just NMS. On the other hand these women don't really know who it is offending, or what kind of sickos out there might be getting a kick out of looking at your naked boob. I understand that it's "natural" but so are a lot of things that you do in private. I personally shy away from it, but if a mother decides to whip it out in public it's their body and their baby, I can easily look the other way,

  • I'm not going to lie. Seeing boob IRL makes me a little uncomfortable. I wouldn't ask someone to leave but if I BF in public I'll use a cover. And before anyone pulls the "you put a blanket over your head to eat then" don't even try it. I no longer take my meals from a boob.

I don't see why the only options are "she should stop" or "you will stare."

If you don't want to stare at someone's breasts, don't stare at them.

  • I wouldn't judge anyone for doing this.  It's their body, their baby, their choice on how they want to feed their baby.  Just because I'm modest about that stuff doesn't mean everyone else is...

However, my DH would probably explode in a puff of smoke if he saw something like that and I would be really uncomfortable seeing it if other men were around.  No idea why, but if I saw that in the presence of all ladies, I would probably be fine, but if there were dudes in the room, I would probably squirm a bit.
  • Even as someone that Bf'ed, that bothers me.  I think that is rude and inconsiderate.  Women are more than free to breastfeed in public, but it does need to be covered.

  • I think this is no big deal--she's feeding her baby, relax!

I don't like sexualized nudity on TV, etc, but this is totally different. I personally would cover myself up while breastfeeding in public, but that's because I don't want to get sneered at by rude people--not because there's anything shameful about feeding a baby.

  • Gals, I was in no way saying I thought it looked disgusting or anything. I'm just referring to that much nudity with male and female patients having to sit a few inches or feet away. I do think it's different if it's just a female environment that's why I said it wasn't an obgyn or ped office.
  • Just as easy as it is to not stare, the person could cover themselves.  It's a personal choice, and I wouldn't want my boob out in public.  If you comfortable doing it good for you.

  • I don't have a problem with it. It's just a boob.

Those saying just use a cover clearly have never had a child who HATES covers and yanks it around so much it would be less obvious if ya just let it all hang out lol. I say who cares, if it bothers you don't look.

I have, my kid hated it, and would rip it off every time once he figured out how. So I would excuse myself to another room.

The way I look at it is if a woman was wearing a shirt so low that it showed most of her areola, most people would look at it as inappropriate, and would make them uncomfortable and I doubt anyone on here would disagree. Throw a baby into the mix and that's supposed to change the level of someone's discomfort? If we lived in a world with all women, then I'd be all for bare breast feeding in public, heck it's way more comfortable and convenient. But the "we all have boobs get over it" argument is flawed, half of the people out there are men, they don't have breasts, and I think it's totally normal for them to feel uncomfortable. We all have a$$ holes, but you don't see anyone trying to let theirs hang out in public.

All that being said, I would never sneer at or criticize anyone for bare breastfeeding in public, and it wouldn't really even make me uncomfortable to see it, I can just see how it would make someone else uncomfortable.

  • While I don't have a problem with breastfeeding in public, I do think she should try to cover as much as possible out of respect to others. If nudity is so natural, we wouldn't wear clothing. It's like cursing in public, you wouldn't walk into a church and start droping F bombs, out of respect for the people of that church. While adults should be able to control themselves and look away unfortunately not everyone is that mature. Kids may also not understand, it's hard to explain the difference between whipping out a boob to feed a child and whipping out a boob period, to a child who doesn't have full cognitive capabilities.

??  Your comparison implies that there is something vulgar or obscene about a woman feeding her child.  How can you compare this with F-bombs?

Who cares if little kids understand?  They're only bothered by it if you teach them to be...and one hopes that by the time they DO have a boob to whip out themselves, they will have more "cognitive ability" to understand the difference.  lol.

Actually, no it doesn't.  Most states (including mine, thankfully.  And yours too) specifically protect breastfeeding, even uncovered, and exempt it from obscenity laws.

You are right they are not the same, but the amount of skin showing would be, so how is that supposed to change someone's level of discomfort? I really don't have a problem with it personally, but I can see how it would make others uncomfortable. I am 100% for breast feeding in public, but prefer to keep mine covered.

I totally agree with this statement.  I sort of feel like how is it any different than letting your hoots hang out when you're pregnant too.  I mean they are gearing up to be feeding machines.  Just makes me HIGHLY uncomfortable.  Just as if I were in public and someone had their boob out any other time.  It's uncomfortable.

If you choose to, sure.  I would rather save my pumped milk for when my breast isn't right next to my kid.  Pumped milk, especially very early on, is a rare commodity.
