I already did a 1 hr glucose, etc. when I was 8 wks-ish, because I am high risk and over weight. I hate needles sooooooo much that I had to have my mom with me to make sure I didn't run or fight someone. lol.
So really, what if I don't go for the 2nd round? Are they going to tell me they won't deliver me?
Re: So, what IF I don't go back for my 2nd round of blood work?
Because I don't want to be delivering in jail from knocking someone unconscious? lol
Diabetes does NOT run in the family at all. I'm really not worried about that.
Yup. Honestly, preventative stuff like this can save your baby a lot of strife. Especially since you're higher risk. Yeah, not everything doctors do is 100% necessary, but I'd never tell someone to get out of the GD test or some of the blood work. Think - you'll be giving birth in a few months. You can handle a few needle sticks.
This. It does not matter if it runs in your family or not.
Also, seeing as you were told you were high risk I don't see the logic behind trying to avoid a few needle pricks. You will probably be getting a few needles during labor too....
Ask for a prescription of Lidocane (sp?) cream. I will numb you like crazy. have someone go with you to told your hand, squeeze a squeezy ball in the hand with the needle.
You will not feel a thing. I swear. Slather that junk on about an hour before. Do both arm joints and top of hands if you need to.
I have used it in the past. I am TERRIFIED of needles and since I can't feel it I dont freak quite as much. Still ball like a baby though
This is a pretty important part of your prenatal care. Try to think of it in less terms about you and more about the welfare and health of your unborn child. Like a prepost said GD isn't hereditary it can happen to any female that is pregnant and can mean serious complications if not monitored. I can't think of too many things that I wouldn't do to protect my LO and I'm sure when you really think about it you'll feel the same way. If you need to bring your mom with you again then do it. Go and get your prenatal care; we are beyond lucky to live in countries where we can get the health care we do.
Just because you don't have a family history of it, doesn't mean you can't get GD. It's a freaking needle. How are you going to handle childbirth if *this* freaks you out?
you have to suck it up and go.
don't give yourself the option of wimping out because of your own fears. This is important.
It's pretty silly to risk having undetected/untreated GD because you're afraid of needles. I'm afraid of giving birth, but I'm not going to just not do it.
Your doctor obviously feels your risk is high, since you were tested at 8 weeks and they want you tested again.
I would say, stop being silly, suck it up, and get the test done.
They test early for overweight patients.
You don't have to do anything. BUT why would you risk the health of your baby?
I hate 24 hr urine tests, but I do them.
I hate getting blood drawn monthly, but I do it.
I gag while taking prenatal vitamins, but I take them.
It's just a needle. Do it for your baby.
no not always. i'm a fatty and i don't go untill i'm 28 weeks.
and to the OP quit being a baby, suck it up and get your GD test done. its for the safety of you and your baby.
Undiagnosed or poorly controlled Gestational Diabetes can KILL your baby.
Let that sink in for a minute.
By the way, GD doesn't have any noticeable symptoms (most of the time). I have GD with no family history. Take the damn test.
Ever see that little show called "i didn't know I was pregnant"? These women go without ANY prenatal care...
I think you'll be fine. You're only putting yourself at risk though...
good luck
This is stupid. Seriously. It is not just herself she would be hurting. Don't get pregnant if you don't want to make the necessary sacrifices for your baby. Selfish.

Excellent point. I guess that means I can stop seeing the Dr. and take up drinking again.
Do you know anything about GD? She is not just putting herself at risk
You totally should. lol
Why on earth would you want to not do this? It's a simple blood test that can save you and your baby from having many more issues! To me, you seem selfish for not getting the test done. So you hate needles, your choice to ignore something your high risk for can cause so many problems. Deal with it and get over it. I hate needles too but I am not risking my life or my babies life because I don't want blood drawn. Your acting like a child and you need to grow up. take care of yourself and your baby.
Oh, and just because you don't have diabetes in your family does not mean you wont develop GD during pregnancy. Do some research before you decide not to take preventative actions.
Sad thing is, she actually believes this is a logical argument. Some people scare me.
My doctor tests EVERYONE at 16 and 28 weeks.
OP, your only other responsible option is to assume you have GD and then follow the diet. Read up on it see which you prefer, a few needle sticks or the GD diet. And really start thinking about how you're going to handle labor. A few needle sticks are nothing comapred to that, with or without drugs.
Ok guys, I'm high risk because of a massive fibroid, that's all.
I'm 99% sure, I'll be going, though, if it's a 3 hour test, we'll definitely lave some issues. It's not that I'm trying to be selfish, its a DEBILITATING fear. The fact that I even can call and tell someone that I need an appt for a blood draw is a small miracle. Once, I tried 3 different times to call, and couldn't pick up the phone to do so, due to full blown panic attacks. To me, it's not just "a little prick." It's not.
Okay, so I used to HATE blood work. It made me sick to think about it. IVs were awful. Then I had a miscarriage. 7 blood draws in the same arm, since I have tiny veins, and only one they can find over about a 3 week period, plus an IV for the D&C. I'm over it now.
But, I have a few suggestions:
1) As a PP mentioned, hydrate. Big time. So you have to pee way more than usual. It helps.
2) Icy Hot. From about an hour before your first draw, stick an icy hot on the site where they will draw the blood from. It will help bring the blood vessel to the surface.
3) Bring Dunkin' Donuts to the lab. Then tell them you are a baby (seriously, that's what I did!) and you need their best tech, and you are willing to wait.
4) Do NOT go on a weekend. Take a day off from work if you need to. The best phlebotomists are the ones that work every day.
5) Personally, I recommend staying away from LabCorps. I had a bad experience, and if you google them, you'll find lots of bad stories.
Good luck, just do it and get it done, and then you don't have to worry about it any more.
Are you serious? I try not to use the word "idiot" on here, but bchenier, I'm going to call you an IDIOT. My Bff's unborn nephew died during labor a year ago this month. My Bff's sister had GD, which was believed to be the result of his death. Please don't tell OP "You're only putting yourself at risk." Her baby can DIE.
*butting in from 3rd tri*
I do not have a family history of diabetes and I was only "mildly" overweight pre-pregnancy (15lbs), have only gained 16lbs so far and I have GD. Its seriously not THAT bad to get a couple needle sticks in order to take care of your unborn child. Did you even do the research on the risks you run if its left untreated?..seriously..get the 2nd test done!
