Someone posted about this yesterday but I can't find the post. My mother is on my case about spending nearly $300 for the Modela breast pump I'm thinking about getting. I've read reviews on several different brands and models and I think particular one will work best for me. She is now trying to buy one off a ebay for me. Used. I've explained to her that I do not want a used one as I've heard that it is very unsanitary. In the post yesterday someone said the FDA verified that it wasn't safe to use someone elses pump. Does anyone have an links or info that I can show my mother? I know It's really none of her business since she's not the one purchasing it.. but I would love some conrete info to shut her up lol TIA!!
There are some that have a closed system and are safe to get used. I don't know which brand they are off the top of my head, but I am sure a quick google search will tell you.
My understanding about the debate has to do with a Closed vs. Open system pump. I think the Madela pumps are open systems unless you are getting a hospital grade pump or renting one. If it is an open system, that means your breastmilk and the prior users have actually passed through the machine parts and there is no way to fully sanitize that.
That being said, I would never get one used off ebay, but I was willing to use one from a friend/family member. I got one for free from a co-worker, but unfortunately it was broken. I ended up getting my Madela from BRU with a 20% off coupon and using my registry completion coupon and opening up a BRU card, I got the $280 PISA for only $181. Just tell her you would rather have a new one for your own peace of mind!

Edit: https://www.fda.gov/MedicalDevices/ProductsandMedicalProcedures/HomeHealthandConsumer/ConsumerProducts/BreastPumps/ucm061939.htm
Scroll down they have a whole section on used breast pumps and a list of pumps that can be reused.
This site has many helpful links.
