If your ds is circumcised?

When did you stop using the vasoline/pertoleum jelly on the pen!s? We still use it at every diaper change (except at night, since it seems like he leaks through his diaper when we use vasoline at night). His pen!s looks like it's pretty much healed.

TIA

Re: If your ds is circumcised?

  • We were told at the hospital that we could stop using by 2 weeks old. We stoped after his 1st dr. appt which was when he was a week and a half cause his pediatrician said it looked like it was healed.
  • It was right after a week our pedi told us that he tells the daddy's to decide when since they have the equipment and can look and see when they would want to not have any protection on theirs! lol

  • I stopped at six days when it looked pretty healed. The doctor looked at it yesterday and said that was fine.

  • The nurse and the doctor gave me the best advice... have your hubby look at it and make the decision... if he thinks it still looks like it should hurt or need vasoline, then continue... we did ours for 10-12 days...

  • i stopped using it when the ring fell off...
  • 5 days. Pedi said it was all healed!
  • Our Pedi told us to stop using it at our 1 week appt...she said it helps to heal better and faster  to 'air dry'
  • We stopped after the pedi oked it at the appointment.

  • We never used it at all.

same here, we were told to just leave it alone

  • ds' circ was done the day after he was born. the hospital said to use it for 5-7 days but we are still using it. I would rather not worry about his peni sticking to the diaper and it hasnt caused any issues with diapering for us so I figure it's not hurting anything Smile

  • i would advise you to keep applying petroleum jelly for a bit longer - it won't hurt anything, but this is the only way to prevent penile adhesions. Trust me, you don't want your son's penis to be shortened for life. I am sure it looks pretty healed by now as it should, but the skin is still very delicate, better be on the safe side.

We used it for 2 weeks

i seriously am appalled to see some responses saying they never used petroleum jelly at all - i hope by that they mean their sons were not circumcised!

  • Yes - and we applied the vaseline for about 3 weeks. It was healed before then but his Pedi recommended it for another week to make sure. When we were in yesterday (7 weeks old) - he asked us if we were still using it to act as a barrier.

  • We used it for 8 days after it was done.  Once it looked healed, we stopped.
  • Stopped when he was less than a week old.  We had our mother/baby checkup at the hospital and the nurse told us it was healed.
  • Can we not say penis on here?

ETA: ok, we can. Just checking b/c that would be a little ridiculous of TB.

Um, no. That's not what I meant at all. My DS was circ'd using the plastibell technique and FYI- we were told that we needed to do nothing at all. DS never appeared to be uncomfortable except for the morning the ring fell off, and he was fine as soon as it did fall off. I don't know what your problem is, but I don't like you insinuating that those of us who followed instructions to do nothing were somehow abusive or neglectful to our sons.

  • We stopped once his circ healed. No need to use it after that because the vaseline really is only used to keep the wound from sticking to the diaper.

LOL I'm sure you mean well, but BS.

All you have to do to prevent penile adhesion is pull down a little on the base to make sure the foreskin is separated, which you should be doing every so often until it's healed, whether you use vaseline or not.

Also, if it does adhere, it's a very simple thing to fix at the three-week follow-up appointment (or however long your follow up is).  It's not shortened for life! :D

  • We waited until our 2 week appointment with his pedi. I know for a fact we could have stopped sooner, but I wanted to make sure everything was completely healed before we did.
