This one comes from FIL...
When DH and I were talking to the ILs about my plans to BF, he explained that his wife's OB gave them advice before my DH was born. Take some sand paper and rough up your nipples. It will prepare your nipples for all the abuse from your LO...
Needless to say, we went without the "roughing up" and are surviving just fine.
Re: Worst parenting advice...

We're really close to my ILs when the LC told me that I had "perfect nipples" we all laughed about it. Now, the joke in the family is that DS is spoiled by my perfect nipples and won't take a bottle. We're so bad...
All I can see that doing is making your nipples MORE sore before LO decides to chew on them for hours a day. And open the skin up to possible infection.
Yikes.
I heard something similar - but with a dry washcloth. uhhh - no way
Worst advice I've gotten - when baby is 40 days, put her in her nursery, close the door and don't check on her till morning so she'll learn to sleep through the night.
ummm. what?!?! awful, awful advice
Where do they pull this number from? lol
Worst advice I've gotten: If she falls asleep while taking a bottle flick her feet with your fingers to wake her up so she'll finish it and sleep all night. Um, no, I will not inflict pain on my child to wake her up.
Oh my word, that makes me cringe even thinking about that!! OUCH!!
A friend (with no children) told me to do this with a toothbrush. I was like "yeah, okay"
That's almost funny coming from a human who doesn't even use his nipples.
You should have asked if using a belt-sander would work better. lol
My mom (who never breastfed) told me the same thing. Then, when they visited us the DAY that LO was born and we talked about how we were having some trouble with him latching on, etc, she said "You should have done the washcloth thing." Wtf!?
