However, it's an unusual enough name (at least for now) that you don't need to get kre8tiv with the spelling. That just makes the kid have to correct people her whole life and is a PITA.

I like this name alot! It was on our list, but just didn't flow with our last name. I would agree with others though, I prefer the traditional spelling. My name is spelled differently, and I constantly have to correct people.
Is your friend thinking of spelling it differently so that it is pronounced the same in several lang's? Amelia in Spanish, for ex., is A-mell-ya, as opposed to the English pronunciation with a long e. If this is the case, I would say either consider a spelling like Emilia or go for the alternative Amalia, which is pronounced exactly the same in both languages.
Something about the "i" in this spelling just looks wrong.
I *ahem* obviously love the name but I hate the way you have it spelled. DD daycare teacher spells is that way (she is new..and hispanic which I think has a lot to do with her spelling of it)
In my opinion it needs to be either Amelia or Emilia, the way you have it spelled is like a mixture of the two names and seems made up or misspelled.
Re: WDYT of Amilia?

It was in our top three if we'd had a girl.

Spell it "Amelia" and it's perfect.
Spelling it "Amilia" changes the way it's pronounced. Now it's "Ah-mill-ee-ah"
