Is Honey Baked Ham safe?

Hi all,

I am getting ready for Christmas and we always have Honey Baked Ham.  What do you think about the Listeriosis risk? I know I'm supposed to avoid deli meat unless it's "heated to steaming", but would Honey Baked Ham fall under that category?  It's not really deli meat, it's a whole ham that they slice for you.  I've tried calling the FDA number on the Listeriosis information sheet my Dr. gave me, but they were absolutely no help this time.

 Any thoughts?

You're having them slice it?  I always just bake the ham myself.

I hope so - I've been eating leftover ham from Thanksgiving and haven't given it a second thought.  Even so, I normally heat it so it's not an issue.

You usually eat it hot, right?  Or does your family keep it cold to eat?

Heat it before you eat it...you will be fine.

I'm thinking if the FDA can't help you, none of us can.?

No, we usually eat it cold - my favorite is straight from the refrigerator.  Embarrassed

Would it work to heat a few slices and then refrigerate them, in order to have them cold?  I'm not sure I'd like it all that much hot.

I'm just wondering if I should even spend the money to buy it if I'm not going to be able to eat it, you know?

confession... I've been eating it cold.

It's fine I'm sure. I've been eating lunch meat this whole time and haven't seen any extra heads on my baby.

I believe Listeria is transmitted through the device used to cut meat.  If you cut it yourself, I think it's fine.

If you're worried just put your serving of ham on a little plate and pop it in the microwave for like, 20 seconds. It does NOT take long to get deli meat to steam, trust me.

Can I just take a second to talk about the divine bagel sandwich I made mysefl for dinner the other day? Delicious smoked turkey, low fat laughing cow cheese spread, cucumbers, red onion, tomato and lettuce on a lightly toasted everything bagel.

I mean... I think I could have moved mountains for that sandwich, it just hit the spot so perfectly. Mmmmmmm. MMMMMMMMMMM....

The ham is pre-cooked by them, so you should be fine.

this is not true listeria comes from the meat itself not the slicer.  I would eat the ham
