3rd Trimester

So are all of you getting your H1N1 shot?

I'm so confused. I wasn't going to get it at all.. BUT my ob really wants me to get it..And I have NO idea what to do! ?? I already got my regular flu shot..and they will be offering the h1n1 shot at my obs office next week...I am kind of leaning towards getting it....Help?!

Re: So are all of you getting your H1N1 shot?

  • I'm getting it.
  • I decided not to get it, until I went to my OB visit this morning, she is adement about me getting it, so I think I will.
  • Loading the player...
  • i'm not.

even tho my OB is really obsessed over it (she recently saw a pregnant woman die at the same hospital i'm delivering).

I have never had the flu shot and i just dont feel comfortable. I may be making the worst mistake but i really cant get myself to do it.

Do your research... dont go by if we are getting it or not.

  • I have almost decided to get it. My ob and family doc have both told me I need to, along with my whole family. My dh is a first responder so we are a double priority... but havent been able to find the shot form yet...
  • Got it.

?No ill affects yet, which is surprising b/c I'm usually REALLY sore after the reg. flu shot. ?Barely sore at all this time.

  • Sweetie, I am in the SAME boat. I'm getting my seasonal (after mucho pressure from my MW) and now am being super pressured into the H1N1, which I had already resolved not to get.

I think I'm gonna wait until after LO is born to decide on that one. He can get whatever antibodies he needs through my breast milk and I can rest assured knowing that I didn't put something i'm unsure about into his body before he was born.

This issue has been keeping me up at night. I'm obsessed and super confused by it all. *sigh*

  • Ive decided that since Im only 2 weeks from due date and it takes two weeks for your body to build the immunity after you get the shot, I am going to get both the regular flu shot and h1n1 after I deliver. That way I'll still be passing the antibodies to baby through breastmilk, but I wont be having the actual shot with the baby in my body. Ive been back and forth and back and forth on what to do, and I finally feel comfortable with this decision.
  • i got it, if you get the shot while pregnant, you can transfer antibodies to your baby and keep him/her safe after they are born since they cannot receive flu shots until at least 6 months old.
  • I was originally planning on not getting it, but I changed my mind. I'm getting it because it really does pose a greater risk for pregnant women. And because I work in a school I figure it wouldn't hurt.
  • I'm getting it at my next OB appt
  • 1st, don't let people's opinions on here make your mind up.

2nd, I am not getting it. I don't believe there is enough testing to make it safe for a pregnant woman. Now, I might get it once LO is born, but I haven't decided yet.

  • I am not.  I have also never had the regular flu shot and won't be getting that one either.  I figure because pregnant is not a time to start trying new things.

  • I talked to my Aunt (who is a nurse and handles premature infants on a daily basis)... and she strongly advised me to get it. I haven't gotten either flu shot yet... but I plan to get both. H1N1 is available through my OB (as soon as they get it it)... but the reg flu I have to hunt down myself (and I will, trust me)...

My main reasoning for getting it: they make H1N1 the same way they make the new "regular" flu shot every year (since every year, there is a new strain of the flu added to the regular flu shot, technically it is just as new as H1N1)... Honestly, I don't understand why they don't just put the h1n1 in the regular flu shot then no one would be whining and there wouldn't be so much confusion... but I think they did it separate so the media would have some drama to report for a few weeks or something lol

  • I'm getting it if I can get a slot at a local clinic put on by the Dept of Public Health. My OB and PCP do not have it and will not be getting it in.
  • I am not.  I am too afraid of a vaccine that was developed so fast and rash.  I will take my chances.  We already had the fever of 103 in my house last week.  Boys got through it fine and I never got the fever.  That was with positive H1N1 outbreaks in my lil town
  • I will be getting it at my next OB appointment.

  • I wont make any decisions based on other peoples..I JUST want to see what everybody else is doing and has to say about it...I was so aganist and then my oB this morning really is pushing for me to get it...ugh
  • Yes and I hope it's in tomorrow at my appt.

The only reason that it was not part of the normal seasonal flu shot is that it hit to late in the year and they were already making this years seasonal flu shot.  Next year it will just be a part of the seasonal shot and no one will care.

Given this information and my OB's recommendation (and the fact that a pregnant woman recently died in our area) I got the H1N1 vaccine last week at a local clinic.

  • I will be getting it.  I work in an environment where there have been confirmed cases. At first, i was very much against it, but now i feel that the risks of getting the virus far outweigh the risks of getting the shot.
  • I'm not...my OB's office doesn't have it, and it takes 5 weeks to really become effective, and I'm only 5 weeks and some change from my due date. When I asked her about it, she said not to worry about the H1N1, just the regular flu shot in my situation since it's effective after 2 weeks.

Also, my DH's uncle is a pharmacist, and he was against it because of the possible side effects (neurological damage, etc) to the baby...and that not enough studies/research has been done on pregnant women for him to feel it's safe for me to get.

Because the regular flu shot was developed for this year before H1N1 reared its ugly head - it was too late to include it.

  • I'm getting it. There are two doctors in my family and therefore, a lot of friends who are MDs....every single one I've asked (OB, Pedi, Infectious Disease specialist) says I MUST get it and believe it's irresponsible to not get it. The question is- when the hell is it even going to be available in my area?!?!?!

  • If YOU want to get, please just wait till AFTER the baby is born! This was created in 6 MONTHS people, not even tested on people let alone a baby still growing inside you. Its not safe. I am SHOCKED at how many people just do everything there OB says, mine is freaking out taht so many people are doing it.

Ladies, take D3! and continue with a multi or pre natal...So NO way in He!! I would EVER take this! Sorry I am so worried for those who are.

  • I'm definitely getting it.
  • The vaccine is created the same way all flu vaccines are created.  The only difference is the flu strand.  They would have included H1N1 in the regular flu shot but since they have to start making them a year in advance, the virus didn't make the list since it wasn't known at that time.  There is no scientific evidence to show that the flu shot in any way shape or form is disruptive to the mother or baby.  In fact, for the first time, they are specifically studying the effects of H1N1 shot on pregnant women... so you can argue that this shot is more studied than the regular flu shot as far as pregnancy is concerned.

You wouldn't skip your pre-natal vitamin.  Why would you skip this?  The risks of the flu to your baby (seasonal or H1N1) far outweigh the risks of the flu shot.

If you need more compelling evidence, read this NYTimes article about the trauma a pregnant woman went through after contracting H1N1:

  • I'm getting it.  More to protect my LO once he's here than to protect myself.

  • I'm not. I only work about 10 hours a week so I'm not around a lot of people. I live in Vermont, which has had very mild cases of the virus so I'm not really worried about it. I'm just being careful- washing my hands more frequently, etc to not get sick period. My OB didn't really seem like getting the shot was a big deal so I'm not making a big deal about it.
  • I am getting it as soon as it's available in my area, unfortunately it's not yet.  As PP said, it's made the same way as the regular flu shot and would have been included in it if they had time.  If you have any further doubts read the story in the following link.  The NY Times is a pretty reliable news source and not only is the story really sad, but the stats they talk about are scary.

It is made the same way the regular flu shot is made, and has been made for years and years.  The flu shot (H1N1 or otherwise) is killed, so you CANNOT get the flu from the shot.  Do not get the nasal spray, which is live attenuated (inactivated) as there is a chance of side effects.

This is an inaccurate statement. This vaccine was tested and made in the same amount of time any other vaccine flu or not has been made. Unless you are anti-vaccine completely this doesn't really apply.

This.  According to my OB, the H1N1 is only separate because it came along too late and they had already started formulating (or growing or whatever) the regular shot.  Based on my research, it is exactly the same and just as safe.  Moreover, the risks associated with getting the flu (including PTL and death) far outweigh any possible risks associated with the vaccine (none proven, lots of speculation).  I already got the seasonal shot (regular one with the preservative) and I'm getting the H1N1 tomorrow morning.

  • i'm getting it,  DH already filled out a request form for me. He got his a week ago b/c he works in a hospital, but there is not even enough right now for high risk groups where I live, only healthcare workers.
  • I'm not sure either.

This from the product insert by Novartis similar statements are included in seasonal flu inserts:

    https://www.fda.gov/downloads/BiologicsBloodVaccines/Vaccines/ApprovedProducts/UCM182242.pdf

    8.1 Pregnancy
Pregnancy Category C: Animal reproduction studies have not been conducted with Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine or FLUVIRIN. It is also not known whether Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine or FLUVIRIN can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman or can affect reproduction capacity. Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine should be given to a pregnant woman only if clearly needed.

Safety and effectiveness of Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine have not been established in pregnant women, nursing mothers or children less than 4 years of age. (8.1, 8.3, 8.4)

  • I got it.

My own research and my OB both indicated that getting it was the thing to do.
