Baby Names

Mother and G-Ma objecting to the name

Soooo my mother and grandmother are objecting to the name Maggie- Jane because it is not "formal" enough.  My mom also said what is she going to go by when she is older not Maggie her whole life right? I said Jane?! (duuh)

Any way Martha is a family name and I think that is what they want me to go for but it is not happening b.c it doesnt make since and Margret is a name I REALLY don't like.

The Husband says we are not changing it at all... and I agree but I don't want to hear about this for the rest of my life ughhh. I even suggested some "Maggie" sounding formal names to him like Magdeline.  Any other thoughts?

  • Your baby, your choice!

Tell them you are sorry you dont like it BUT that is her name!

  • Once they see her - they will love her no matter what her name is!  My best friend named her first son Henry Thomas and her MIL objected.  He is three now and she just loves every bit of him and doesn't even think twice about his name.

Maggie is a great name. And who says your little girl won't WANT to go by Maggie when she is an adult? I personally have been called my first name all my life and didn't even think to go by my middle name when I became an adult.

My name is similar (Mandie) and I don't have a "full name". ?I've never felt like I needed something more formal.?

  • I do agree with them, but it is your child so name her Maggie since you and your DH love it.
  • My niece is named Maggie. I think she'll be ok. Your kid, your name.
  • I work with a woman in her 50s named Maggie. It suits her fine and doesn't seem like a little girl name. I also took care of a 90 year old lady named Maggie and it fit her fine. I think it is a name that works with any age, especially in my experience. If you love it use it, it will grow just fine with your LO.

  • I know you're probably sensitive about it, but when you share the name, you have to be prepared for some stupid remarks. When we shared our DD's name before she was born, my dumbo MIL vigorously suggested alternatives, like we'd say, "Yes, your idea is much better than the one we agonized over for months, and both love."

DH finally told her (at 53 years old), "When you have another kid, you can use the name you like. Enjoy." That shut her up...
