My doctor doesn't do them unless he thinks there's a need. No problems = no internals.
Actually I like this better. I'd rather not know if I'm dialated/effacted and then still be stuck with a baby who wants to come late. It would just make me more impatient/anxious.
My doc starts them when he does the GBS at 35/36 weeks but I opted out for my second one since I was so sore from my first one. They were fine with that.

Mine started at 35 weeks when I had my GBS test done. Then at 36 weeks, you start going every week and usually get an internal at each visit.
Ask your doctor. It is different in every office.
Sometimes doctors don't do them unless requested.
