From "onesies"/bodysuits to two pieces

This is more a question for those with older babies or STMs, but when did you go from onesies/bodysuits to two piece outfits?  I am finding some fall and winter items on sale and wanted to start stocking up on some of the bigger sizes for DD, but I'm not sure whether I will want more bodysuits and one pieces by then or is there a point where two piece outfits become more practical?  Right now I much prefer anything one piece with a snap crotch but I have no clue what to expect down the road.  Someone enlighten me!

Re: From "onesies"/bodysuits to two pieces

  • I bought a little of both for all ages. The onsies are nice and I bought them until the didn't make them in her size. I have long babies so I'm always pulling down shirts and dresses.

  • I was wondering about this too.  We're out of onesies that fit but she has plenty of two piece outfits.  I think I may buy some onesies in the next size up just to have as back up outfits for the diaper bag, but I think I'll stick with the two piece outfits going forward since we have so many that family gave us.  We need to make sure she wears them all at least once.

I was also thinking that the more mobile she gets, those shirts will be riding up all the time.  Onesies might be better in those situations but I have no previous experience.

  • When he started walking.  It's easier to check if a diaper is poopy on a toddler if they are in two pieces (just pull back the waist band).  That said, on the hot days when we're at home I've totally stuck him in a onesie.  I purposely got a few of them for this summer for that reason and in case he turned into a stripper at bedtime (to keep the diaper on there secure).

  • At 6 months I started more tshirts and shorts unless we are just hanging out then I do onsies. I have onsies in bigger sizes but I wish I would have known to stock up in tshirts. I've just learned what brands are longer. I can't do children's place their shirts are short.

  • By the time she was 18m old I wanted to stop using onesies. But it was mostly bc she looked like such a big girl and onesies looked babyish.

  • I like onesies with shorts but DD quickly outgrew the 6m Carter's shorts so I bought her 9m rompers from Target today.  She wears onesies when we're at home but when we go out we put her in either a romper or a two piece that looks like a dressy top over bottoms that just cover the diaper.

With my son, we had him in pants when he started walking to protect his knees from falls.  DD will be a year old in December so we will have pants for her then since we are in the northeast.

  • 11ish months when DD started crawling I started putting her in shirts much more than onesies. We CD, so onesies are never long enough for her fluffy but, anyways. :) I actually found the more mobile she was the less shirts rode up.

  • I LOVE the one piece body suits that have buttons all the way down. I had DD in those until she outgrew the 24 mos ones at 16/17ish months. However, I still have a couple that I use as her PJ's under her sleepsack even though they are super short.

We do shirt/pants when we are out. It is easier to check for dirty diapers and doesn't make her look baby-ish.

  • I keep a onesie on DS underneath of his outfit.. Helps act as a line of defense between his skin and outfit!! Mostly, I o it because he drools a ton and soaks his shirt.. We found his eczema gets way worse if his shirt s wet against his chest.. But I also did this as an infant, too.. Habit, I guess.. My Mom used to do it on us girls, so I always thought that's what you're supposed to do!!

We stopped using onesies all together at around 1. She was mostly wearing 2 piece stuff from about 9 months on.

  • I'd say we started shirts vs. onesies at about a year.  A few months later he was only wearing onesies for extra warmth under pjs.
