Parenting after a Loss

Baby activities/Gymboree/etc.

Has anyone attended any special classes with their baby yet?  I looked into Gymboree for DD once she is 6 months and it is a pretty long drive for us.  I'm not sure it would be worth the drive, not to mention the expense.  There are also some classes offered at our town library for infants and toddlers for free.  Kindermusic, art, story time, etc.  Have you done anything that you thought was particularly nice or a waste of time?  What age would you recommend?  I am still a little early but classes tend to fill up fast around here.  Also, I'm not a super social person so meeting other mommies really isn't a motivating factor for me...I mostly would be interested for DD's benefit, not mine.

Re: Baby activities/Gymboree/etc.

  • DD is in daycare during the year but I pull her out in July when I'm off for the summer. I signed her up for Gymboree last July when she was 9 months. It was great for her to be able to climb their equipment, have some signing/dancing and a different type of stimulation that she normally wouldn't get at daycare.

She was in a class meant for the next age group (10-16 months) so it was more of a challenge, which was what she needed. We did the same thing for her this year at 21 months and she loves it.

We paid $59 for the month for unlimited classes (we go 2-3x a week because those days don't interfere with nap). It is a 10 minute drive and an additional $2 for parking each day.

If it was more expensive or a longer drive, I don't know if I would do it, especially if there are other things closer for you and free. We don't have anything free or cheaper except for story time at our local library, which is once a week (we went once and it was just DD and a 5yr old), and not all that great.

  • We do BabyStorytime at our library because it's free :)

I staked out the library beforehand (it would be one ten minutes away, versus the one a little closer that I had been too before, but that storytime filled up the next day!)  Anyways, I talked with the librarian, and felt confident bringing DS there.  He's probably among the youngest, but most are in the ten-thirteen month range.  One other is DS' age, and two are 14 and 15 mo.

We also have a great leader though, and I love being social ~ but my husband, who I drag along isn't social, and yet even he enjoys it; because though we sit in a circle, most of the activities are onexone with the child, and social playtime afterwards is quite voluntary (though we all stick around)

All in all, our baby storytime is ending tomorrow, and I can't wait to sign up for the next sessions :)

  • I took DS to storytime at the library when I was on Mat leave because its free, they also did crafts afterward.

My LOs are in daycare full time and they have a pretty full curriculum, so for our case I'm sure that's enough activity for them, and I haven't wanted to add any more.  I might look into enrolling DS in gymnastics soon

(we had friends who did this with their kids because their son was a climber and they thought it was a good way to teach him how to land a fall, their son, I tell you: I think he was around 3 at the time, he would wake up in the middle of the night and scale the fridge using just the handles because mom kept the candy up there, I wouldn't have believed it but I saw pictures)

  • We've basically tried everything. I'm a SAHM so I made the rounds of free trial classes.

We hated Gymboree and My Gym. Loved Little Gym (even though it was the most expensive). We've been doing LG since DD1 was 4 months old (she's now 21 months old). We'll start DD2 at 4 months old as well. DD1 loves it so much that she'll start gymnastics there at age 3. It has just enough structure combined with exploring time compared with learning new skills that its perfect for her.

Kindermusik didn't interest her (we did a couple trial classes) and once she started walking at 9 months I know it would have been pure hell because she had no interest anymore in sitting still. We did do a Music Together trial class which I actually liked a ton better than Kindermusik.

We've gone to various libraries for free storytime, but now stick to the one down the street (they do storytime in 7 week sections and then takes a month off).

I could go on and on about what we tried, but I won't bore you. If you have specific questions let me know.

I will say Gymboree was by far the cheapest and let you come the most. The ones by me are also overrun by kids now that its summer and all the moms do is socialize and all my friends who had kids in Gymboree pulled them out and put them in LG.

  • We just did the Houston children's museum yesterday and we are officially getting the annual family pass. They have an area upstairs for babies and toddlers under 35 months. They said they sanitize everything and I was skeptical, they not only have workers monitoring the door, what kids are doing but people transitioning toys out. They also have a place for dirty toys. It's 87 a year and it's for all of us. Look into a children's museum? It's all infant toddler friendly

Oh ya, we were gifted passes to the Providence Children's museum and I *love* taking DS there, They have a room for kids under 4 years specifically, but DS also likes playing where the "big kids" are.  I feel like, DD would have to be at least a year old or walking before it would interest her.

  • So far the only thing I've paid for is a $25 yearly membership to a local family center. They have twice weekly storytimes and a "play cafe," where the littles can play safely and I can drink coffee and talk to other moms. A lot of the classes here are too expensive, and when DD gets a whole lot out of just rolling around on the floor exploring, I'm hesitant to spend the money unnecessarily. Story time at the library is great, too, and if yours have free classes, that's awesome!

  • We go to a mommy & me class every week. It's been really really fun! All the babies were born within a month of each other and it's been a wonderful way to connect to other moms with same age kids. It's a little expensive, but might just be because I'm in the LA area.

DD was in daycare from 8 weeks on. But, I work retail so I have weird days off. We used to go to story time every week at the library which was definitely fun. We've been to the children's museum a bunch and she absolutely loves it there. I also recently got a membership to the science center out here which has also been a blast. I'm a big science nerd so it's nice to see her enjoy it too ;)
