Pregnant after IF

Is anyone else considering cloth diapers?

I may be crazy...but I am seriously considering cloth diapering my twins. It is significantly less expensive, better for the environment, and more comfy for baby. It is also a little more work, due to additional loads of laundry. By all the research I have done so far it looks like I could save between 2 and 3 thousand dollars by doing this, plus of course there are the aforementioned benefits. Is anyone else considering cloth? If so, which brands/styles are you looking at? There are so many choices, it is all so overwhelming!

Re: Is anyone else considering cloth diapers?

  • I am! I am! I have a friend who did it with her twins and is doing it with her new baby due soon. She saved a significant amount if money. I am planning on still having disposables available for long trips away from the house or vacations but aside from that would love to cloth diaper. There is a cloth diaper board on here that is wry helpful. I haven't started looking at specific brands yet, I am still learning the different types of styles.

  • We would like to, but we first need to figure out daycare and make sure that the daycare is on board before we start investing (we're not sure we'd cloth diaper if it was just at home).  We also haven't decided if we will buy special cloth diapers for the newborn stage and then transition to cloth or whether we will just do disposables for the first while until they are big enough to fit into the regular cloth diapers.

My SIL really like BumGenius diapers.  I've looked around a little bit, but all of the options are definitely overwhelming!

  • I did cloth diapers with my first. It is a lot of work. I had the Grovia and they are like the easiest thing and I think it was still to hard for me. Make sure you can do laundry several times a day. Best of luck .

  • Yup, we're planning to CD our twins.  We've got a stash of BumGenius 4.0 pocket diapers sicne daycare is amenable to them (we figure grandparents/babysitters/etc will also be more comfortable with them).  We've also got some BumGenius Flips hybrid diapers that we plan to use at home with cloth inserts.  Still need to complete our stash -- which we'll probably do by adding more pockets from a different company.  We'll also do cloth wipes.

Since we expect twins to be a bit overwhelming in the beginning...we plan to start out with disposables, until the girls fit in our one-size pockets/hybrids.

As for sites -- off the top of my head -- I've found the CD boards here on TB and at BabyCenter, Green Mountain Diapers, and the Cloth Diaper Whisperer to be very helpful.

Have you figured out if it is cost effective to buy the cloth diapers if you are only using them part time?

  • We're cloth diapering!

I would definitely check out the CD board here on TB. They have a great FAQ section that has been really helpful for me. One thing I've found the most helpful is an Excel spreadsheet where they compare/contrast all of the CD brands based on type of diaper (AIO, Fitted, Hybrid, Pocket, etc.)

Also, you'll want to decide if you plan to CD when they are newborns or when they're out of NB diapers. Most of the sized or one-sized diapers start fitting around 8-10 lbs. so they won't fit a teeny newborn. I'm doing both a newborn stash and a stash when he gets older.

We're doing a lot of prefolds and fitteds with covers when he's a NB, they are cheaper. Then we're doing a lot of one-size pockets and AIOs when he's older.

We're also doing a combination of brands because we might like one over the other, especially with fit, absorbency, etc. Luckily used CDs have a really good resale value so we can get some money back if I don't like one.

ETA: Also check out the cloth diapering 101 videos on youtube, among other CD videos.

I registered for CDs at Kelly's Closet, but Nicki's Diapers and Jillian's Drawers are 2 other really good CD websites.

  • We're planning on doing disposables at the newborn stage and then moving to CDs. I'm not sure if I'm going to stock up on too many before the baby gets here because I've heard it's good to try several different kinds to see which fits your baby's bum best. Then we'll buy a good number of that particular style. That's the plan, anyway!

  • We are planning on cloth diapering the twins. I have been working on building my stash for a little over a month now. So far we have all pockets in a variety of different brands. Mostly One Size, but starting to add some newborn to the collection. I have joined a bunch of swap pages and coops on facebook, and have gotten most of them at really good prices. We are open to the idea of using disposables when they are first born and when we go away for the weekend/have a sitter/etc if we need to. But plan on using cloth 90% or more of the time. We registered for disposable wipes, but I've also looked into making my own cloth wipes to use at times as well.

I'm on the fence- it's giving me a bit of a push to see so many other people taking a stab at it.  The biggest hesitation is that it scares the crap out of me- it seems like such a commitment.  I don't want to invest in all the diapers only to learn that I won't follow through.  My mom is going to watch the baby 2 days a week, I tried using her as an out (I'm not going to CD because it would be more work for you...) but of course she told me to do whatever I wanted and she was fine with it.

I saw some great advice on the CD board awhile ago. They said, give it a go, you can always sell your diapers on craigslist or where ever and if you don't like it or it's not for you, that's cool. I think a low-pressure trial is the right way in. If you get newborn diapers and don't like it, don't buy more sizes. You always at any point, switch to disposables.
