Parenting after a Loss

XP pool safety-death mentioned

Our community is currently experiencing the loss of a young child who drowned in our community pool over the weekend. I just wanted to make a few posts on here to remind parents that drownings occur very quickly and often silently. Please be sure you or a responsible adult is with your children when they are swimming in a pool, the ocean, a lake, pond, stream or river. It only takes a second and a parent's watchful eye can only help.

My thoughts and prayers of course are with the family, the lifeguards, our city and the emergency officials who assisted that day. Such a tragedy.

Henry Cavill...You're welcome!

Re: XP pool safety-death mentioned

  • It's always sad hearing about the loss of a child.  There was a recent death of a 2 year old in our community in a lawn mower accident.  We can't keep our children in a bubble, but we can be cautious.

    ~*~All AL Welcome~*~

  • The accidental death of a child is very sad under any circumstances, last year a toddler was washed into the ocean north of Boston and sounded like it happened so fast that the parents suspected foul play, there are also a couple deaths of infants and toddlers accidentally left in the back seat of cars that I hear about annually (one involved an 18 month old left in a van accidentally during a daycare trip - shudder, this one really bothered me, thankfully, my DCP wont do trips with the kids until school age and they have everything they could ever want onsite).

Also other ways that children can be injured include shopping cart tipping over with the car seat on the top (some people think that they are made like that to have the car seat click in, but that is not the case), and people who load their kids in the car in the winter while shoveling it out, tail pipe gets blocked with snow and the kids die while the parent is unknowingly continuing to shovel out the car (There have been one or two deaths a year like this in Montreal since as long as I can remember)

Andrea - I remember all three of those incidents and they bothered the hell out of me, too. The tailpipe thing was just this year in the blizzard. A 12 year old. I can't even watch the news any more. It ramps up my anxiety and my imagination way too much.

Ugh, me neither, no news.   On a side note, when I first went back to work, I did have a post it note like in your siggy challenge pic because MH was always the one to pick up the kids, so I had to be extra vigilant to check the back seat on the occasions that I dropped them off or picked them up, in the chance I forgot a sleeping baby.  Well, I'm in the habit of always checking now, even when I *know* there is nobody there.

That's why they're called accidents, nobody intends for things like this to happen.

It is so very sad...it sounds like all neighboring swimming pools are revisiting their rules/regulations too...so I guess if something at all comes from all of this heart ache, maybe the new rules/extra safety precautions will save another child in the future.

    Agreed.

I will not take DS swimming by myself, because I am terrified of even loosing my grip on him.  I would much rather have someone with me ~ because an extra pair of eyes certainly can't hurt!

In WI (I live in MN), a two year old died, because he somehow managed to get the car keys, and locked himself into the trunk and suffocated . . . and the saddest part is, that searchers shined flashlights in the car, and underneath, but the car was locked, so they didn't think he'd be inside the trunk.

All loss is sad.  But it seems like the accidental ones, just pull the rug out from underneath you.

I get those little jolts of "AHH" when I'm out in the car somewhere, even when I know damned well I'm alone. Plus I still have nightmares about leaving them. One tip I read was to leave your purse/phone in the back seat with the baby every time, so you have to go back there to get it. Also I need to update my sig pick lol!
