Like for your kid? Or an older kid?
I think this is super cute for a toddler: http://www.potterybarnkids.com/products/my-first-backpack-puppy/?pkey=cgear-my-first-collection&
But for an older kid you can never really go wrong with LL Bean.
(I had to google 'bookbag'.)
Dinosaurs or something sports
(if you don't want 'name' type stuff... like superhero, cars & jake, which I'd also agree with are "cool"

Onederful Mother:Oops, sorry for the P&R, I meant for 5-8 year olds.
Jansport with the name embroidered was the "thing" last year.
When I was in middle school it was the LL Bean ones and everyone had their initials on them.
That was circa 1995. I'm assuming that's still a good bet.
In high school, everyone had North Face backpacks.
Also... I lol'd at "bookbag".
I just ordered the My First Backpack from Lands End for DS1. They are having a 30% off sale so the total, including monogram, was $23.00. I am hoping to get 2 or 3 years of use out of it at least and use it for school and travel. It's designed to hold a nap blanket, change of clothes, shoes, and other preschooler stuff. I didn't want to get something too cheap because usually the zippers go pretty quickly on more inexpensive book bags and I didn't want to have to replace it anytime soon.
ETA: They have lots of designs for older boys as well. I liked all of them and will probably get DS1's next book bag from there as well when he goes into elementary school.

Unrelated, but I also say "bookbag." I grew up in MD and now live in NY with my native-NYer husband. I get hassled on that one as well.
IMHO, it's a bag that carries books, right? DH argues that that's too limiting... it doesn't HAVE to carry books and should therefore be called a pack as a more all-purpose term.
The things you use for camping & hiking are backpacks.
The thing you carry to school is a bookbag.
