Introducing Sippy Cups

Hey ladies!  I hope you all had a great weekend!

I am thinking of giving Sophie a sippy cup to play with and to get used to the idea of.  I realize she won't drink much from it and will probably just bang it a lot, but was wondering: what do you put in it at this point?  BM?  Water?

TIA!

Edit: Sophie is just about 5.5 months for those on mobile.

When DS was trying to figure out the sippy, we just used water or it would have been a big waste of formula.  When he got the hang of it, we started to put some formula in the sippy so we can transition off the bottles.  He still does get a sippy of water at every meal though.

ETA:  We started offering the sippy around 6 months.

  • I introduced water in a sippy at meals at 6 months. She didn't get it until 10 months, and only now actually drinks from it. She gets some BM in her sippy at lunch, but wants her milk in a bottle if its near nap time.

  • We introduced water in a Nuk training sippy cup at 6 mos and just introduced a straw cup at 9.5 mos. They love their Nuk cups and can get some water out of them. They are more like toys. The straw cups were introduced at meals and they seem to get more water out of those. We use the Zoli cups.

  • We introduced water with meals at 6 months in the sippy cups. I DO NOT believe this, but our DC teacher told us that if we put BM in a sippy cup DS would not take other liquids from it when he got older.  I didn't put BM in his sippy cup until he was one, but it was only because that particular DC would serve BM to children in sippy cups because of it being a bodily fluid and that it could spill. Our new DC allows us to and he takes BM from a sippy just fine and he drinks other things fine as well.

  • Thanks ladies!  I think I am going to give her some water in the sippy.  I think it would be fun for her and MH (ha!)  He's always looking to give her new things to do, and this would be something for them to work at together while they are home during the week alone.  Smile

  • We started the sippy cup around 6 months in between meals. We just filled it with water and started with the cup with the straw first. He seemed to pick that up pretty fast. But since he took bm I wasn't able to put it into a sippy cup until around 11 months. And then he would only take milk out of a advent sippy cup without the straw with the soft spout. Good luck!

  • Hi Ducky, we started M on a sippy cup around 7 months.  (Was going to start earlier but I didn't get around to buy him one until then.)  We have the OXO sippy.  It took M 2 weeks before he figured out how to drink out of it!  The OXO has a pretty tight valve, so we ended up taking the valve out at the beginning to let water flow out easier, otherwise M would never realize he could get water out from it.

After he learned to drink from it, we put the valve back.  Now at 8.5 months, he does a pretty good job.  We only put water in it; on a good day, he drinks about 2 oz all day long...  Haven't tried BM yet but may do soon, b/c M doesn't take a bottle!

  • I second the Nuk cups.  They are a great transistion from bottle to sippy.  We didn't do the sippy transistion until 11-12 months old.  It took us awhile to find the Nuk cups.  He just wasn't interested until we got those.  We started with milk to get him interested (cow's milk was a new thing and what he was interested in), and then water.  He still mostly drinks water throughout the day.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!
