Pregnant after a Loss

Failed Doppler Attempt

I thought dopplers were supposed to help ease our minds, not make them more anxious?!  I just attempted to find baby's heartbeat for the first time (after watching several YouTube videos), and couldn't find it after 20 minutes.  Ahh!  This is why my DH didn't want me to buy one!  I'm 9w5d today.... guess I'll just try again tomorrow and hope for a better outcome.

Any advice, ladies who've successfully done this around this time?

  • I found DD's at around 10w and that was early. Stop torturing yourself and check once a week.

  • I refuse to get a Doppler. I feel like it would make my anxiety So much worse. That's just me though, everyone's different. I even work in L and D and could use a doppler or get an US anytime I work, but I refuse to do anything at work. I can't imagine finding out something happened while at work. I make my husband come to every appt. Just because I am afraid I will be alone and get bad news. I wonder if this will get better one I can feel baby moving.

  • Take a breath.  We got our doppler at 12 weeks and it took DH almost 30 minutes to find it the first time.  9 weeks might be too early to find it with the Doppler that you have.  Good luck tomorrow, but don't fret.  If you don't find it, wait a week and try again.

  • I'm pretty sure my husband is going to take mine and hide it while I'm sleeping. I got mine last Monday and have only been able to find it twice and I have tried everyday, sometimes twice a day. I try the same tricks every time but a more full bladder helps, I found laying flat but bending my knees over the edge of the couch with my feet on the floor has helped. Baby is still low. I will be 13w tomorrow and haven't popped yet so she is very low. I know it is stupid to say, but try not worrying about it too much. I have read about docs having a hard time before 14w even. Maybe put it away for a week before trying again. Wish I could take my own advice! Good luck!!!

  • You're a little early to be trying to do home doppler, doctors and midwives who use the doppler on a constant basis often have hard times getting a heartbeat that early.  I didn't even try until after 12 weeks.

  • Put the doppler down for another week or two, you're still early! I didnt buy one to avoid obsessing, but my doctor found LO's hb after about 10 minutes at 10w5d ish. It took the NP about 10 minutes again at 13w at my next appointment. It can be hard because they are SO tiny and you have to be in the perfect position. Hugs hun.
  • Ditto PPs about it being really early. I don't have a doppler (because it would have been more anxiety inducing for me), but at my 10w appointment my OB could not find the hb with the doppler, so she did a quick u/s, and there was baby, healthy and swimming around. By my 14w appointment they were able to find it pretty easily, but even then it took them a couple tries.

  • I didn't find it until 11w1d. I also didn't stress about it at all leading up to the day I found it. How? By simply giving myself a very short time limit to find it, around 3 minutes each day. And that was it for the day. Around 9 weeks I started playing with the Doppler and just turned it off after my time limit was up. It really did work for me in keeping the nerves calm. When I finally found it I found it in under 30 seconds and pretty much every time after that it took just a few seconds. Twenty minutes is just too long and just allows you too much idle time to worry.

  • I didn't even try until I was 12 weeks. Try not to stress too much which I know is hard. My doppler saved us during the first tri and I don't know how I would've gotten through it without having my doppler.
  • I didn't find my baby's HB until I was about 14 weeks. I have a tilted uterus, so that might have made a difference. Be sure to check when you have a full bladder. That does help. Good luck to you!

  • I was able to find the HB that early but it was pure luck.

I will tell you that first, use lots of gel. Second, try with full bladder, if that doesn't work, try with empty. It works better for different people.

But most of all, are you looking too high? Your baby is WAY down, like right at the pubic hair line right now. I even had to sometimes have the wand into my lady hairs a little. Baby slowly started moving up around 11 or 12 weeks. The you tube videos almost all show them using the Doppler up too high. Go LOOOWWW.

But don't freak out if you can't find it. My OB had a hard time finding it at 10 weeks

    Good luck sweetie!

I know telling you to "stop stressing" isn't going to help because I've been there.  I was one of the people that was able to find the heartbeat at 9 weeks BUT (and there are a lot of buts), it wasn't easy.  First, this is not my first child and my uterus is tilted forward.  I had an ultrasound showing that the baby is at the very top of my uterus and extremely close to the outside.  In fact, the first time they did my ultrasound they couldn't see anything with the vag cam but when they switch to the abdominal u/s, it was perfectly clear.  So, with that being said... I'm definitely not "the norm".  I had to press down quite a bit at 9 weeks even to get the faintest sound of the heartbeat.  I would encourage you to give it another week if you can.  If you still can't find it, I hope you can take comfort in knowing that after talking to my doctor's nurse, she said most of them can not find the heartbeat until after 11-12 weeks... and they are professionals that do this on a daily basis.  ((BIG HUGS))  The doppler plays a lot of mind games.
