Re: How does your garden grow? GTKY

  • This is our first year in this house so the first time we have gardened here as well.  We have almost no flowers, hoping to change that next year! We ripped out some overgrown and poorly tended rhododendron and banan plants from the previous owner. We also apparently have a peach tree and an apple tree but no fruit because we only have one of each. Thinking we might plant more once we know where we want them.

no herbs this year. I have s few different kinds of tomatoes and some are doing great but others are getting moldy because of all the rain we've had lately! I have also started harvesting cucumbers and will soon have zucchini and yellow squash as well as sweet peppers and a few varieties of hot peppers. DH is excited to make his own chili sauces soon.

I definitely failed at peas, strawberries, broccoli and spinach! It's the first time I tried any of them and I put them in the ground way too late. Trying spinach and broccoli again in the fall. I had rabbits chew a hole in the fence and they got all the strawberries.

we have lots of blackberry bushes that are almost ripened but so far I have not been able to beat the birds to them. Thinking about netting them.

I am gone from about 6:30AM and get home at 6PM M-F so this year I just planted 6 bell pepper plants since I wasn't sure how much time I would have to tend a garden.  The first week the rabbits ate 3 of the plants.  Sad  Now they are doing well and flowering so I am hoping to see some produce on them soon.  I planted lavendar geraniums, spikes, and ivy in an old wash tub.  We have hostas, peonies, and lilies that come back every year that are planted around our whole house.  I think next year if all goes well with the peppers I will plant bell peppers, tomatoes and jalepenos for salsa.

  • Fellow gardeners, update us about your gardens.

Herbs: a variety, but they are all DEAD because I planted them in a container and neglected them

Edibles: tomatos- lots of varieties- 24 plants, zucchini, summer squash, butternut squash, carrots, strawberries, red onions, yellow onions, cantaloupes

    Flowers:

What have you harvested already? strawberries, carrots, zucchini, summer squash

Failures (learning experiences): do not plant herbs in containers bc I WILL neglect them, also square foot gardening does not work well for me as my garden is a huge MESS and over crowded!

Future plans: buy a house in the country, for more land and growing space, seriously.

    Miscellaneous: I love tomatoes!!
