How did your prior labor start?

mobile: How did your prior labor start?

Spinoff a post I saw in August. Thinking back, it was extremely helpful for me as a FTM to know many various ways that labor started for people.

With my first, the day before my water broke and I went into labor, I felt like crap. I was about 39w, I had gone to the chiro, and felt lousy the rest of the day. Just extra sore and tired I think. I slept normally though and sat up in bed at 6a the next day and my water broke. Contractions started while I was sitting on the toilet. The week before, I had about 3 hrs of timeable contractions that never went anywhere.

With my second, I'd been having intestinal upset for about 3 days. Looser BMs, feeling gas-like cramps. She kept going posterior, so the night of 39w, we did rebozo sifting as per spinningbabies.com, and she went back to anterior. I was very tired, and still having intestinal cramps, so I went to bed around 9p. I woke up at 2:15a with my water breaking. Contractions again started while I was on the toilet, and she was born two hours later. Stick out tongue

I never noticed any bloody show or mucous plug with either one.

So you can see how around 39w this time, I'm gonna be expecting my water to break since that happened the first time! LOL. Trying to stay mentally flexible though as there is no guarantee it'll go the same.

What about you guys who have given birth before? Obviously some of us were induced or had a scheduled cs so you never went into labor .

Re: How did your prior labor start?

  • Mine started about 2am with contractions. I moved out to the living room because I wasn't sure if it was the real thing or not. By about 4:30 I was sure and went to wake up DH. He jumped out of bed faster than I've ever seen and was ready to go to the hospital that min, lol. Anyway, got to the hospital around 5:30am and had her at 7:10pm. I think I remember having diarrhea that morning before we left, and slightly increased discharge for about a week or so before. But definitely no huge blob of MP, and no bloody show that I remember. I kinda want my water to break this time, it didn't break last time until I started pushing.

  • I was very uncomfortable and felt a lot of pressure and indigestion-like pains. Fell asleep and woke up when my water broke.  Contractions picked up about an hour later and dd was born 12 hours after that.

  • I had a few days of cramping and diarrhea that intensified the day of labor. Once the diarrhea finally stopped the contractions really picked up. My water didn't break on it's own though. They broke it at the hospital around 5 cm when labor started to stall.

Agreed! This is really interesting for me to hear. I have been present for my two best friends' labors/ births, so that is pretty much the extent of my experience with childbirth, so I'm enjoying hearing a greater sampling.

  • I woke up on induction day, 38 weeks, with strong contractions every 23 minutes. Thought it was just upset tummy, didn't realize there was a pattern until we were on our way to the hospital. About 3 hours later waiting on a bed, I finally told the nurses. I was only dialated to a 3, but labor progressed from there. Unfortunately, I ended up with a emergency csection .
  • I had pre-term c/s's with both, so I don't have a labor-starting story.  It was great to hear everyone's stories.

One of my sisters had a pretty interesting story with her 1st:

She had no clue she was in labor.  She thought she was just really constipated and waited waaaaaay too long to go to the hospital.  She went to the ER for her "constipation pains," and that is where she learned she was in labor and was taken to L&D.  (I think she was a couple weeks early)  She was too far along for an epidural and her dd was born within a few hours of arriving to the hospital.

My water broke at 38 weeks with DS. I wasn't in labor though and hadn't felt a single contraction at that point. I had been dialated for a couple weeks, but thought nothing of it, as that is so common. I was at a wedding and felt a couple gushes, but thought it was just pee/sweat/discharge. About two hours later, I realized my spanx were soaked through and I knew something was up. I drove home, took off the spanx and left a gush of water on the floor, so off to the hospital I went.

Labor/contractions didn't start with my water breaking, I ended up needing a pitocin induction which ended in a c-section after pushing for several hours.

I didn't think it was very fast at the time, about 17 hours? Maybe I should ask my OB about this time! I did ask if it's any faster because this baby already feels SO low, but she said no, it's more just because its number 2 and your insides aren't as tight so they just feel lower. Darn, lol!

Oh my bad. I read it as 7:10 AM after contractions starting at 2am. That would have been quick. 17 hours is pretty average for your first, but most second labors tend to be shorter anyway so you can hope for that. Big Smile

  • I'd been having timetable contractions since about 38 weeks. At my 39 week appt, the doctor checked me, said I was maybe a fingertip dilated, and told me I'd be pregnant for another week. I came home feeling sorry for myself, and sat on my exercise ball for about two hours. The next morning, I woke up at 6 am with mild contractions. I went about my day since I didn't know if it was the real deal or not. DH and I shopped all day. Contractions picked up about 3 pm, we left for the hospital at about 5:30pm. I was dilated to a 3 when we arrived, so I had to wait a bit to be officially admitted. DS was born at 10:35 am the next day. Hoping for a faster labor this time.

ha! That's wild! I don't hear too many stories of water breaking while away from the house, even though that's what everyone fears!

  • I felt totally normal aside form what I thought were BH. A couple days shy of 38 weeks and I expected to go late as a FTM... Friday night undecided to "practice timing" my BH because I felt I was having hem frequently enough. And I was a major dork and nervous that I couldn't time them right and had to practice. Funny thing was, they were exactly 10 min apart but totally painless. Took a warm bath and they went to 5 min apart. And hour later, back to 8 min. This went on, going from 5 min to 10 min all night and all Saturday. Because they didn't get more intense and didn't keep speeding up, I still thought BH. Saturday, called midwife. She said to drink 6 oz of red wine as that would stop BH. But as it turns out, after not drinking so long, I just got tipsy and passed out, so??? I had a light pinkish brown streak on toilet paper a couple ones but that's it. More discharge but couldn't tell for sure if AF or peed myself. Overall, several weird things, but nothing SURE. I felt great, worked in the garden, cooked dinner for friends...
Sunday, woke up with a realdeal holycrap contraction at 2 am. Started timing and they were 2 min apart! Headed to birthing center and got there at 3 am. Eli was born at 4:06!
So, needless to say, a little terrified at how quickly this labor could go especially since birthing center is 30 min away, but at the slightest regularity of "Braxton hicks" we'll be headed to town!
  • Went Xmas shopping at 39w3d, and was walking around a lot. That night I woke up with strong timetable contractions which continued for another 24 hours before I decided it was time to head to the birth center. DD was born at 39w5d. My water never broke on its own so MW broke it right before pushing. So the whole thing from start to finish was about 36 hours, more than 24 of those being me laboring at home.

  • I went in on my due date to get induced. They put me on pitocin for 5-6 hours before taking me off and all the contractions stopped. I went home that day. Two days later, I went in and they broke my water and started me back on pitocin. The labor began.

Interesting tidbit I learned in my childbirth class that the Prenatal Care Coordinator mentioned she said she's always heard women going into labor about a week after losing their mucus plug (if some notice they have it). Another thing she mentioned is that for those whose water does not break while they are in labor it serves as a cusion for the contractions and is not as painful as the water being broken. Of course being on the interwebs I've read a lot of other different things but I thought what she said was interesting.

  • My husband had the day off (Monday) bc he was called in on Saturday to help another soldier out and as a thank you they let him take the day off.

My husband took me off roading on some bumpy roads on base so we could search for black bears.  I was 38 w 2 d and I really wanted to see a black bear lol.  They were always seen on base and I was said I'd never seen one.  We drove around, torn up some mud, and road some trails.  We actually did see a mommy and baby black bear too!

I saw my doctor that afternoon and he said if I wanted to I could try light nipple stimulation since I was already thinned out and 1 cm.  My husband made dinner and we watched a movie while we ate and I tried the nipple stimulation.  Around 10:30 that night I lost a huge chunk of my plug and had my bloody show.  That continued all night as did small contractions... strong enough I couldn't sleep.  In the morning (Tuesday) my SIL came over and took us to the store to make sure we had somethings she thought we needed and then we went to the hospital.  I was told to walk around for 2 hours and come back to be rechecked.  I did and they sent me home.  The next morning (Wednesday)the same thing happened.  I went back again wednesday in the early afternoon and I was admitted and put on a morphine rest since I hadn't had any sleep since Sunday night.  I couldn't sleep but the pain was far more manageable (DS was sunny side up and my back was on FIRE).  My water never broke so my doctor broke it at 7 cm.

I started pushing at midnight and DS was born at 6:19 am via emergency forceps delivery.

  • The day before I had her, I had my "bloody show" while being checked for dilation... Later that day I began to cramp.... By 2:30 in the morning I was woken up by contractions...I hung out, took a bath,  etc to further progress and went to hospital at 9 am... I was 5 1/2 centimeters upon arrival.... Water broke (naturally) at 9:30 am...labored throughout the day......delivered her at 4:42 pm...
