Pregnant after IF

IVF ladies! How many embryos did you put in?

Hello ladies! I'm lurking from the Infertility and TTC after
35 boards. Just wondering, of you that did IVF and are pregnant now, how many
embryos were transferred? For my first fresh cycle we choose one 5AB blast, a
BFN. For our upcoming FET we're going to transfer two.

How many did you transfer, what were the grades and are you pregnant with a
singleton or twins? Thanks ladies!

Three ectopic preganacies in left tube in 1999, 2003 and 2004. HSG in 2010 concluded left tube blockage. IUI with femara in 2012 BFN. IVF #1 June 2013, 20 retreived, 14 mature, 12 fertilized via ICSI, one transferred, four frozen, BFN.  FET in September 2013 - BFN:( FET #2 April 2014 - BFP!!!!

Re: IVF ladies! How many embryos did you put in?

  • My info is my siggy.  I don't know the specifics in regards to grading, just whether they were blasts or morulas.  We put back 3 embryos both times and ended up with a singleton both times.  Good luck to you!

ETA:  I was 38 and 39 respectively, which also played a role in choosing that number.  My RE briefly considered putting back 4 the second time, but I wasn't ok with that, and luckily it all worked out fine.

They strongly encouraged me to just use one based on my high risk for OHSS, my age (32), and the high quality of the embryo.

  • I'm 39 currently and here's what we've transferred over the past 2 years of IVF cycles

    IVF #1 : 2 3day embryos = BFN

    IVF #2 : 3 3day embryos = BFN

IVF 3 and 4 were bank cycles : We froze any high quality blasts at day 5/6 and had them CCS screened.  We had one normal from each batch.  IVF3 only had one high quality blast at day 6 and he was CCS normal.  IVF 4 had 4 high quality blasts at day 5/6 and only one was CCS normal.

We transferred one 5AA CCS normal blast on 6/20, I'm currently 6weeks 6 days pregnant.  We saw /heard the heartbeat yesterday :).

We transferred two both times. First time I was pregnant with a singleton and now I'm pregnant with twins. This last time both were blasts that were hatching
  • Because of our high grade 4AA and CCS testing "genetically normal" and the risk of twins in my age (37) was 50%, we did and eSET.

We were really adverse to the risks with twins, both for me (bed rest etc...) and for them (premature birth issues) and concerned about having twins as an experience for a FTM and FTD.

We're happily PG with 1 bean.

  • Hi!

The answers to your question are going to be heavily dependent on each poster's age, diagnosis, number of failed cycles, whether doing a Day 3 or 5 transfer, and the quality of the embryos available for transfer.

Also -- and this is semantics, but I think an important distinction -- you transfer embryos; you are considered pregnant if they implant into your uterine lining. Not trying to be too particular, but if all embryos implanted, then IVF would be a lot more successful and every RE should transfer just one no matter the circumstances, which obviously isn't real life.  You can look up implantation rates on the SART statistics page.

Because we had one good quality embryo on Day 5, we transferred just one.  And man am I glad, because we're one of the rare situations in which that one embryo split into identical twins.  So be aware that can happen, especially if you are transferring more than one.  :)

    Good luck!

Married 8/2008. IVF with PGD March 2013.
    3/22 ER: 25R, 20M, 15F. 9 genetically normal, and 3 survived to Day 5
    3/27 ET: transferred 1 embryo, beta 9dp5dt=163, 12dp5dt=639
4/25 1st ultrasound at 7 weeks = identical twins with heartbeats?!!!

  • We only had 1 fertilize, so we transferred it in day 2 at only 4 cells. All 4 cells were the same size with no fragmentation. We definitely wanted to transfer two, but that decision was taken out of our hands.

  • I don't remember our blast grades but we transferred 2 pretty good 5 day blasts and are pregnant with twins now.

We went back and forth on how many to transfer but our RE urged 2 since doing another IVF round would have been very unlikely due to insurance coverage for us.

We feel that as first time parents we don't know any difference between just having 1 vs 2 so having twins was not a huge deal.

  • It's really impossible to know what is going to happen - but you need to make your own decision on how many to transfer based on what you are comfortable with.  I had to transfer a total of 11 embryos (over the course of 5 IVFs) before we finally got pregnant - and we now we are pregnant with twins.

  • Honestly, it doesn't always matter how pretty the blast looks in the dish. I highly recommend getting CCS/ PGD done after 35.  I had 4 blasts tested, and the one that had the highest visual grade turned out to be one of the two abnormals.

We transferred one 5CC and are at 10 weeks, 6 days.  The other normal is a 4CC and we're freezing her for next time.

  • I only had one embryo which we froze and used later for a FET.  It was a fully hatched 6 day blast.

  • both times 2 perfect blasts.  first time, i got pregnant with one, but had an ectopic, second time pregnant with twins, lost one at 8 weeks.    if i had been doing a 3 day transfer or so-so quality i would have done three.

  • We did a 5dt of one "perfect" blast, though I'm unsure of the actual grade.

    I'm KU with a singleton.

Six years of infertility and loss, four IUIs, one IVF and one very awesome little boy born via med-free birth 10.24.13.

  • My clinic doesn't use the same scale as most. But we transferred 3 grade C blastocysts. The embryologist said two of three barely made the cutoff for a C and the other was middle of the road. Two implanted but we lost one right around 5 weeks.

  • Our RE was adamant about us only transferring one (based on my age and the grading of our embryos).  We transferred one 6AA blast and i'm currently 20 weeks pregnant with our little girl :)    The RE said that our chances for pregnancy we about the same transferring one or two, but the risk of twins was greatly increased.  Good luck!
