Cloth Diapering

How many times do you reuse cover with prefolds?

Hi everyone!

New to CD here.  I have a preemie who is 6 weeks old and weighs 4lb 14oz now.  I have a newborn stash of prefolds and AIOs  that won't fit until 6lbs.  I have 4 covers that work now with preemie prefolds.  How many times do you reuse the covers if they don't have poop?  They don't smell like pee after using 2-3x.  I don't want to buy more tiny covers.

  • If they don't smell and have no poop on it...keep using it

  • For a cover, you can easily hand wash in the sink right after removing and it should be dry by the time you need ot again.

  • Alternate them so that they can air out.  if you do laundry every 2nd day or so, it should be fine.

edit:  DD was 5 lbs when she came home and only 2 cover fit her, and 12 prefolds - the Bummis pack. (plus 4 AIOs that had to be washed after each use)  I did diaper laundry every day until she fit into the next size.  I figured by the time I ordered new diapers she'd be bigger anyway.

This. I normally rotate between two covers so I have one airing out while the other one is on the bum.

  • If there's no poop I hang the cover, inverted, over the arm of the change table and use the 2nd one. I only toss it in the wetbag if it has poop on it. I had 4 newborn covers and currently use 3 OS, and I've never run short before laundry day.

This is what I've done.  If the cover is a bit damp (the tag is wet or something from a particularly pee-heavy night-time prefold) then I'll sit it out to air out for the next diaper change.

  • Haha, So I reuse it until my husband throws them in the laundry. I am a big fan of rotating but if they get wet my husband washes them so I'm not sure I have ever made that decision with out them being actually dirty.
