July 2013 Moms

Breastfeeding moms

Anyone else having trouble remembering which side they did last or am I alone? Lol.

I started wearing a hair scrunchie on my wrist and then I switch it to the other wrist when it is the next feeding time.

Man my brain is mush!!

Re: Breastfeeding moms

  • I'm such a geek I ended up downloading a free app for my iPhone that tracks side, time, etc for me. It's come in handy because I can never remember which side LO nursed off of last.

  • We've been charting since Day 2 per hospital's orders, so I just look at our chart.  We stop after Day 15, so I'll have to use your trick from then on! ;)

  • I had that issue too so I started wearing a ring I hadn't been wearing.  I switch it from hand to hand so I remember which side I'm on.  There has been a time or two that I forgot to switch the ring until I was almost ready for the next feeding.

  • We received a chart from the hospital but I downloaded an app that times it and records which side and diaper changes. Works great so far and was free!

this. i've got an app for my phone that tells me which side, how long, diapers dirtied (wet, poops or both) and has an alarm option so it'll wake me in the night to feed her if she hasn't eaten in x amount of time. it's pretty nifty!

  • I have an app too or sometimes I just squeeze a boob and see which is fuller.

  • I do the hair tie thing easy enough. Keep a notebook with diapers and times for bf until I've monitored a week at least last time

  • I got a bracelet from one of my cousins. It is nice because it can even tell at night which side I used last- Right is raised so you can feel it, left is indented into the plastic so you don't have to turn the lights on. It also has a thing for how long you bf, but I'm not using that- been keeping the chart up from the hospital.

This! Sometimes I purposely feed on the same side. I.e. I fed right side then left side. So the next feeding I'd feed left than right. Especially if he didn't eat much on the second side.

  • I had the chart too but I stopped using it when we came home from the hospital.

  • I use an app, because I'm so foggy I can't seem to remember what time she ate last if I don't keep track of it somewhere. And then if I'm not sure, I start to fuss that maybe she's gone too long, so the app helps my sanity right now.

As to which side, I don't always alternate. I just cop a feel and go with the heavier or fuller one.

Which apps do you use? I've been using the iPhone app "What to Expect...: Baby" which tracks Sleeping, Feeding, Diapers and Vaccinations, but I don't see an option for a timer. I want that! I've just been setting my separate timer to remind for feedings.

No.. I think I do it more for my comfort and not wanting to have uneven boobs. LOL

  • Me! I just downloaded an app after reading this post lol
  • I wrote it all down in a notebook. It became such a habit that I kept it up longer than I needed to... then I couldn't bear to throw the pages away so they are still stuck somewhere in a bin of baby stuff.

Going with whichever side feels more full or heavy is a totally legit method

The only problem with feeding too much on one side is that your supply will come in more on that side, thanks to supply n demand, and you'll have lopsided boobs. There can be a dramatic size difference if it gets bad. So as long as your guessing by feel is accurate enough to keep from having one huge monster boob, its all good

Going with which side feels heavier or full worked with me thru 50 months of nursing my boys! Every woman has one breast larger than another, and sometimes that becomes more evident with breastfeeding, but it usually goes back how it was once you wean.  you can also nurse twice in a row on the smaller side occassionally to try to balance it out.
