We bought two car seats thinking we would need it. we NEVER used it. I didnt put much thought into it, but if I had it would have occured to me that the car seat is always with the baby- so two seats is unnecessary. We could have saved money and just bough an extra base.
Edit: we have a chicco cortina travel system and love it.

You just need an additional base. Unless you have an unusual situation that would require more than one seat. (i.e. your daycare dropoff and pickup)
Also, I would look into not getting a travel system. There are better car seats and better strollers out there for almost the same price.

Actually, many daycares let you leave the car seat there (all the ones we researched did). We had one seat, two bases, and alternated dropoff and pickup.
Ditto doing your research. I actually really liked both the car seat and stroller in my travel system, but a lot of them suck (the car seats have low height and weight limits and the strollers are heavy and crappy to steer), it is often better to find a car seat you like, then a stroller you like that is compatible (or get a snap 'n go, even though I hate them, to use until you have a better idea what you need in a stroller).
