Pick Your Poison

Would you rather your LO STTN but not really nap during the day? Or nap regularly throughout the day but wake up for MOTN feedings?

My LO was not a napper and started STTN at about 6 weeks. This week he suddenly has been napping every few hours but is waking up every 4 to 5 hours over night. I think I prefer this. The MOTN feedings are quiet and even if he doesn't go right back to sleep it is kind of our bonding time together so I don't mind. But I am more tired this way for sure.

Re: Pick Your Poison

  • For me,STTN is most important. In another couple months, when I am back at work , the napping won't help me get anything done during the day, but I feel so refreshed after a 6 hour stretch at night! Although your night doesn't sound bad, if you still get 4 or 5 and naps too!

  • STTN, I can handle them being awake all day as long as they sleep at night. If they don't sleep at night then no one is happy. I can't nap if and when he does because I have 2 other kids. Otherwise it probably wouldn't make a difference.

  • I honestly wouldn't mind either way. I'm sure when I go back to work I would want her to STTN. At the moment she takes about 3 short naps during the day and has been sleeping 5/6 hour stretches during the night since about 6 weeks as well. (Minus two night where I guess she wasn't really tired). I do enjoy our night time feedings because it is just the two of us!
  • That depends on how often the MOTN feedings are.  I'd much rather wake up twice at night to feed him and have him nap during the day.  I would get NOTHING done if he refused to nap.

My LO started sttn a few weeks ago, and always gave me a good 4 hour nap during the day. However, his nap during the day has gone from about 12-4pm, which was great, and allowed me to get a lot done, to him not napping till about 4pm! I'm not into this at all! He's still sttn, so I guess it's not terrible, but I don't get much done now :( I need the big stretch at night, b/c I myself cannot nap when the sun is up (it sucks - bad).

  • Honestly I don't know my daughter nap regularly and wakes every four hours during the night. The night is easier because when she naps she wants me to hold her, so I get nothing done. I would rather sttn...

  • I would take either right now! Lately LO hasn't been sleeping well at all.... 30 minute catnaps during the day (and then cranky all day because she isn't getting enough sleep and she fights it) and went from sleeping one 4 hour stretch at night to being up every 2-3 hours. We got 5 hours and 6 hours once and now we are reverting back to shorter periods. I am so tired. I hope it gets better soon!

This exactly. My LO is number 3 in our house.
  • I definitely would rather the daytime naps. She falls back asleep so easily after her MOTN feedings but during the day is another story...

  • Can I call for a happy medium??? I don't mind the MOTN feedings bt wish they were more than 3 hour stretches. I like the naps too though cuz I can get stuff done!!!

  • I would choose sleeping through the night. Once I'm back at work, I'll need the sleep as well!

  • Even though I have to get up in the MOTN to pump regardless, I would rather LO STTN. It's faster to pump than nurse and I don't have to worry about LO falling back asleep in a timely fashion.

Definitely prefer STTN. I'd rather play and cuddle during the day. That said my LO typically STTN and takes a 2 hr nap during the day...that quiet time is nice. Still a full nights sleep does me good so if I had to choose one, I'd prefer STTN.

  • Wow I'm surprised everyone said STTN. Even though I'm going back to work I still prefer LO when he has had more sleep during the day. If he doesn't nap he gets so overtired and cranky. I want him to nap regularly at daycare.

Definitely STTN. I don't really care how often or how long LO naps during the day because he's very easy and pleasant when he's awake. I can still get stuff done and he bounces or swings and coos and gurgles.
  • Ya I'll take the day naps. LO mostly dream feeds at night so I don't have to get her back to sleep, but her naps suck. She just woke up from a ten minute blink. I would totally sacrifice some night sleep to have her nap longer

  • As of right now I'd say naps because when S doesn't take a nap, I'm carrying her around since she doesn't want to be put down and doesn't seem to fit any of her carriers well enough for me to feel comfortable having her in them. That makes for up to almost 10 hours of carrying her around if I can't get her to take a nap from the time DH leaves for work to the time he gets home.

Once I go back to work though, I wouldn't mind her STTN although one feeding in the MOTN isn't too bad. As it is, I wake up and check on her every few hours anyway so getting up to feed her is not that big of a deal. It's the pumping after I feed her that always gets me!

  • Right now, I don't mind that he naps during the day and doesn't STTN. I am able to get a lot done around the house, and as selfish as this sounds, RELAX and have a little me time.

However, I go back to school in August so I am hoping to get him to STTN by then! We'll see though. I'm not doing very well at prepping him for it thus far.

  • Both. This question is so hard to answer lol. It's like asking if you would rather have chocolate or ice cream...Or be beautiful or smart.
I guess it depends on the day. Some days I would be ok with sacrificing night sleep for day sleep.

    Wow you are lucky!!

I'm extremely grateful for each and every day that he entertains himself, and I don't expect it to last forever. Don't get me wrong, I still spend a lot of time having "conversations" and playing with him, but if I need to do something or take a shower, he's fine hanging out until I come back.

I thank my lucky stars. A lot.
