Does milk change?

So I know you can keep milk in the freezer for up to 6 months, but I wondered, does the milk change in fat, calorie or lactose content in accordance with LO's needs as they grow?  So for example, my LO is 3 months (13.5 weeks) - can I still feed him milk from the freezer from when he was 2 months and he will still get what he needs in terms of macromolecules for a 3 month old?

Re: Does milk change?

  • Yes, breast milk changes but frozen pumped milk is still better than formula.

This. Just don't let it be he primary source. Use older with newer. IE don't give a 10 month old only milk that was pumped 4 months ago.

Its still ::better:: than formula. Milk gets fattier with age so they drink less. Likely if you completely loose your supply your stash will last a month or so not months on end. It will be OK. My lo still gets occasional milk milk from 5 months ago and he is a year. So relax it's okay, mobile smiley.

Well, it is still preferable to formula.

But what would make you lose your supply?  BM supply does not just go away. It is supply and demand and generally when supply dips, it can rebound with just a few steps.

    I don't know. I'm new to this! I don't anticipate losing supply but I didn't know.

  • OK, well, you CAN actually lose supply randomly, I know people that it has happened to, although it is not common so there isn't a need to worry about it.
