Poll...sort of...

DH and I were driving along today, and suddenly he said, "I am NOT going to shower with [DS]." Apparently he'd been thinking down the road a bit? Anyway, a long discussion ensued about teaching a kid to shower, whether it's easier to teach them when you're in the shower with them, and the pros and cons of seeing your parents naked. Apparently DH never saw his parents naked; I showered with both of mine when I was little.

Just out of curiosity [and sheer pumping induced boredom], what say you? Will you or your SO shower with your LO, or will you be on the other side of the shower curtain?

Re: Poll...sort of...

  • DD has showered with both of us since she was old enough to stand. It's not all the time, but when we're short on time, it makes the most sense. There are days that the only way I get a shower is when she takes one with me. Nudity isn't a big deal in our house at the moment.

I do, however, feel there is an age when seeing the parent of the opposite sex nude is inappropriate. I'm not sure when that will be, but once we get there, the coed showers will cease.

DS has showered with one of us since I can remember. Dd has already been showering with DH.

  • I have showered with my girls before. Not by choice more like we didnt have time for the whole bath and all that. I don't think it's that hard to stand outside the shower and help/tell them what to do. I never showered with my parents and now that my girls are getting older I won't be doing it anymore. I just don't feel comfortable doing it.

  • I don't feel like its a big deal...I remember showering/bathes with both of my parents when I was a kid. Not sure on the exact age that it will stop, but that is a see as you go deal...We camp a lot, so kiddos will definitely shower in with a parent and not by themselves until much older.

    This!

  • I showered with my mom sometimes growing up and with my dad but my dad wore a swimsuit lol. I dont know if I will shower with my kids. I know DH won't though because he's uncomfortable with anything like that.

  • Haha, I never knew it but I guess we're a clothing optional family.  I took a bath with dd before and I sometimes take her in the shower.  DH refuses to put clothes on when he doesn't feel like it because "I don't have to wear clothes in my own house."  I assume at some point he will want to cover up when dd is aware!
  • DS takes a lot of showers with DH because its faster. Ive only showered with him once or twic a long while ago, hes 2.5 now. Im getting better about making sure i at least have a bra and underwear on in front of him. Helps that im BF so basically always wear a bra.
  • We both agree that once a child can speak the coed showers should stop. However, should it ever be absolutely necessary for DH to shower with DD he would wear swim trunks, same with me if we ever have a DS.

  • I never remember showering with or even seeing my dad naked. But he moved outwhen my parents separated when I was 5. My mom, on the other hand still changes in front of me and vise versa. It was me my sister and her so there was no need to cover up. I have been the same with my girls but will probably try to start covering up around ds when he is about 18 mo. Or weaning whichever comes last. The girls showered with either dh or i when they were very small but not now. We are acctually very carful not to expose him when the girls are around.

  • When I was little I don't remember ever showering with my parents. I know I have never seen my father naked. I don't think I will be opposed to showering with my dd only if it is in a time crunch though not just because I want too. I know my dh and myself would not feel comfortable with her showering with him.
  • I don't have a problem with it from a nudity standpoint (up to a certain age), but my thought right now- not being in the situation yet- is that I would want to instill the idea that shower time is alone time, especially for mommy!

  • I don't think it is a big deal at all when they are young. I think it's sweet when little kids shower with their parents, but agree, there will come a time when it ceases to feel and be appropriate. Hopefully that moment is obvious. I definitely have memories of being in the shower with my mom as a little kid. I assume I will have times I invite m to shower with me. Not sure if my husband will be comfortable but we will see.

  • I'm not there yet, but I'd have no problem with showering with DD. H has mentioned that he doesn't really want to, but I'd have no trouble with him taking her in the shower until 3yo or so. I remember showering with my dad as a kid, nbd.

  • Hmmmmm.....  I have zero recollection of how I even learned how to shower... I know my parents never showered with me, mom has always had body issues and dad never thought it appropriate.  I also seem to remember taking baths until I was eight or nine because I preferred them, and one day trying a shower instead...

having said all that I probably wouldn't mind showering with DD in a time crunch situation, but I know DH won't... He would prefer I do that because that's just how he is.

Never thought about this but I like this about the shower being time for mommy.

  • I'm pretty sure that our kid's or kids' experience will differ due to their gender. DH is less modest than I am and more athletic so if we have a son I imagine he will be spending time in the men's locker room at the gym.

But not in a creepy way. I made that sound weird...

  • I only ever showered with my mom. My girl isn't really old enough but I'm curious about the answers

I haven't decided on that one yet... But it reminds me of the time my 4 yr old niece told me about the hair on Mommys butt....

    Undecided here as well.

My niece commented on mine when we were all getting ready one day and my mom was like "You'll have that too when you're a lady."  My niece immediately replied "I don't want to be a lady.  Looks itchy."

  • I never showered with my parents. I don't think it's necessary to shower with your kids.
I have showered with my boys when they were very young. When kids are quite young I think it's fine but as kids get older I don't think there's any reason to be naked in front of your kids. That's not to say we need to be overly sensitive over our bodies.
  • We will. I really don't see the big deal in it when they're little Smile Though I know DH may be a little apprehensive of the day DS notices he's clipped and daddy isn't.
